05 Rover 45, only one key

    Hi,
I have a 05 Rover 45. I am very happy with it but I only have one key and one fob and I am worried about it failing.
I am interested in getting a replacement fob but getting one seems to be very difficult since Rover went bust.
There is this website that gives the option to remove the ECU and send it to a company in order to get a fob but this seems very dodgy and I cannot afford to go without the car: https://remotekey.co.uk/rover/rover-oval/

Does anyone know of anyone who can reprogram fobs for Rovers in Ireland?

Dodgy was not the correct word to use. Risky is a better word. A lot of risk in removing the ECU and sending it by post to the UK. Also going without the car at the moment is not an option as my wife is pregnant. Also, I assume by removing the Electronics Control Unit the car is as dead as can be.

Maybe talk to a locksmith, they might be able to clone a copy of your main key. I'd imagine it might be easier to do that with a 2005 car than say a 2015 car.

Would Land Rover dealers not have the equipment to re-program the fobs? They were still the same company in that era.

    Join the Rover forum at
    http://forums.mg-rover.org/

found them invaluable for advice , spares and access to Rover diagnostic programming when I was running a Rover 75

Thank you for the advice. I have contacted some of the Land Rover dealerships without any response. I have also tried some locksmiths and they are not able to replicate the fob.
I will keep trying with the dealerships and join the Rover forum and see if I get anywhere.

Have you tried Colleran's Locksmith in the Small Crane? They sorted a car key for me (Toyota).

I'd be more concerned if the other key turns up in the wrong hands.

There are hundreds of thousands of cars out there with keys missing. I wouldn’t be too worried about a Rover 45.

Depending how desperate/serious you are, K&C Garages in Dublin should still have the equipment to do this

Sorry, my post must be confusing. I actually bought the car with one key and one fob. I didn't realise how difficult it would be to get a spare fob!

Dunnes Locksmiths in Nenagh can do it.

This is the only one I have been able to confirm that will do it. They said they can do it for €160.

Just wanted to post back about this for anyone searching in the future. Colleran's Locksmith in Galway was successful in copying the key & fob.
