Hyundai i40 clutch kit

Hi, I bought a 2014 i40 last week, hoping someone has experience with this

When I test drove it, the clutch had to be buried to the floor to get it into gear smoothly. it is hard to get it in if its not touching the floor
leave the clutch out 5mm and the car is taking off, (3 other people stalled it on the first go)
Its a bit heavy to press reaches the floor.

I drove another 2012 that had the kit just installed and it felt much smoother and nicer to drive.

I knew buying it the risks and the price of a clutch kit, (pressure plate, release bearing & clutch disk)
I brought the car to a mechanic, and he rang this evening and thinks the clutch is fine, that some cars can be like that

I dont want to keep driving it and risk doing more damage

    What are peoples thoughts?

That's a popular fault in those. It needs a clutch kit, I'd almost question any mechanic that is unaware of that issue at this stage, it's a very popular fault and that model is out 6 or 7 years now.

It'll get progressively worse until such a time as having the pedal fully on the floor still won't allow you to select/ change gear.

Thanks, that was what I was thinking after reading up about them online.

In the mechanics defence, he said he hasnt worked on any i40s before.
I think Ill bring it back to the main dealer for a look,

The warranty is void because the previous owner got 2 stamped services at 35 and 55, and im getting one now at 85.
    Needs to be 20, 40, 60, 80

Is this problem an issue with the i20 and 130?

I assume it's a UK car in miles if the intervals are 20, 40, 60 etc? As the intervals on the Irish cars were 30, 60, 90kms

    Yeah it is.

just onto the machanic again, told him my concerns, he thinks a bad clutch should come all the way out before it starts to move.
Gonna drop it to the main dealer I think, rang earlier them earlier for a chat, I asked him did he do many and he said "mainly Garda cars" :D :pac:

Found this guy on youtube, explains how clutch system works on Hyundai i30 and cheap fix for grinding clutch to engage gears. Not sure, but maybe you will find the same thing on i40.

Sorry can't post URLs , just add youtube.com before other half link below:

Thanks Kama ,here's the link , this is good , because I know of Hyundai 3 piece clutches been fitted with no improvement , so I think he's onto something with the master cylinder damper collapsing and diverting pressure and leverage away from the slave cylinder.

The master cylinder and clutch regulator have been getting changed for the last 4 years at least, they're known to be the actual problem. They're both modified parts at this stage.

I have same problem in my 2017 Hyundai i40. Gears are very notchy and very clunky noise getting in to hear. Only 21000kms and I took it to Hyundai garage and they say nothing wrong with it. I'm taking it to solicitor now and an assessor

I don't know many solicitors that are good at diagnosing bad gearboxes, probably better off with a mechanic.

Id have to disagree somewhat. While they contribute to the problem in my opinion its the pressure plate or actual synchros that's the problem.
When the master cyl / regulator go you loose pedal almost completely and the biting point is only an inch from the floor but I ve changed numerous cylinders and regulators only for the problem to still exist.

The reason for solicitor involved is there may be a court case down the road . No need to be sarcastic is there? The Garage says there is nothing wrong with the gears but I know different. I have an assessor coming out next week to examine gears next week. Seems to be a lot of faults with gears in Hyundai

I've sold roughly a third more regs and cylinders than complete clutches, and Hyundai have only modified the regs/cylinders. In the last year alone I've sold around 400 of the pair, and about 300 of the clutches

Fast moving stock! The issue must be near universal.

I would have done about the same. Not disputing the fact that the cylinder and reg is giving problems. Just I very rarely see the reg and cylinder fix it completely.

When I say EVERY i40, I mean literally every i40 has a clutch problem. It's not 1 or 2 a week, at the height of it we were doing 7-10 a week easy. Couple that with crappy clutches in the ix35 and i30, and in fact i20's too!

If I remember right they ran out of the modified cylinder and regulator and it was about an 8 week wait? That was around this time last year.

Hyundai were always great with their auto boxes but their manuals really leave a lot to be desired.

I had a bit of a hand in that...

We never ran out because we ordered in 100 of each at one stage :o
