I told a friend of mine that he could use my car for his test.

I am obviously fully qualified and experienced /insured driver.

Does he have to state in writing that he is on my policy explicitly for that one day and is proof thereof needed?

Must he be placed on the policy prior to the test, even only for less than one hour?
It may depend on each policy i presume but does anyone have any practical advice on this?

You have to place him on the policy. If he's not a named driver on your insurance, he's not insured.

You would have to add them as a named driver to your policy. Even if it is only for a 1 hour test. There is no policy I know of that would allow a learner permit holder to drive, without being explicitly added to the policy.

Yes i thought so. Thanka for your replies.

. But my question is does he need WRITTEN proof of this? Or when they ask him the question - "are you covered by insurance? " is it simply enough to say Yes?

All they will check is that the insurance disc is valid and in order. The insurance disc will not state the names of drivers who are insured. You will have to sign a document which states that you are insured to drive before the test begins.

He simply has to sign a declaration to confirm that he’s insured on the car that he’s using. He does not need to provide any written evidence that he is named in the policy but obviously, legally, he must be.
