New job and P45 from previous employment question?

Just a question regarding providing your P45 from your previous employment to your new employer in new job.

Does your new employer usually keep your P45 when you give it to them, or do they have to return it to you once you are 'on the payroll' ?

Sorry if this is a silly question :(

    Thanks in advance! :)

Traditionally, the P45 you receive is parts 2, 3 & 4. Part 1 gets sent directly to Revenue by your previous employer. You give parts 2 & 3 to your new employer. They use part 2 to register your new employment with Revenue, and keep part 3. You should keep part 4 if you need to make a social welfare claim etc.

But, if for any reason you don't want to give your P45 to your new employer, you don't have to. Get your new employer's PAYE registered number from them, call revenue and tell them you need to register a new employment and allocate your tax credits and cut off point to your new job. Give them your start date and any P45 details they request. They should have the details on their system already anyway.
    Hope that helps

Register the new employment on revenue online services (ROS)
It's very straightforward, just need the new employers registered number .

If it was just a single printout, then yes, they will keep it.

But if it's one of those old 4 pagers, then you would keep some of it too.

    Thanks for the replies.

I was asked by management to register with the Revenue online, which I did.

What is the purpose of registering online with the revenue?
Is there any need to provide a P45 to new employer if you register online with the revenue?

I changed jobs a few months ago and just registered the new employment and closed off the old one.
Didn't give the new employer the P45 afaik, revenue sent on my details, tax cert etc.

It's ok to just register the employment online or via telephone with the employer number. As of January, P45s / P60s will no longer exist. PAYE modernisation will be alll done through an online portal (My Account)

When are they going to get rid of this ridiculous outdated system of P45's and just give each employee an end of year statement of how much they've earned from each employer? This statement(s) can then be either entered online into ROS or done manually through revenue. Then you either get a refund or a bill from revenue depending on your earnings.
This would mean no confusion in tax rates every time someone changes job. The P45 system dates back to a time when people stayed in jobs for decades and completely impractical these days.

It's the PAYE Modernisation Programme. They are also scrapping P35/P30.

Revenue want to have a fully digitised PAYE system from 2019.

Thanks all. Set up online account with the Revenue.

Just still need to get my employer's registered number.

Is it ok to enter this number onto my 'profile' after first setting it up online, and saving changes, etc??

My next pay day is this Thursday.

Select ‘add job or pension’ when you log in to myaccount and put in your new employer details there. Make sure the old job is ceased on your record before adding the new job.
