Toilet Cistern Not Working

Hoping this is an easy diy job that I can do myself.

Had a plumber in to do works on an annex, used the toilet in the main house and broke it. Wanted us to pay another fee to fix the toilet that was working perfectly before he used it.

Issue is that the cistern is filling okay but is overflowing (Water rushing down back of toilet pot). We were able to stop the flow and turn back on when flushed but this is now also not working and it is staying on continuously. The water tank is in the attic so the constant rushing of water overhead at night is maddening, not to mention the rushing water into the toilet. I've heard this can drain the water tank in the attic and ruin the electric shower so . Very little money left at this point after almost completing the annex so hoping it's a quick fix.

If the cistern is filling up then there is only a few things it can be.

    most common

the Bulb (float) is not moving upwards with the water thus it is allowing water to come in the side of the cistern constantly.

check the bulb is on properly. it is secured to the arm and check the arm moves freely up and down on its access.

Second the shut off valve at the end of the arm is clogged with dirt or the rubber seal is degraded or missing. Meaning when the Bulb arm is raised with the water, it is not fully sealing the water coming in and it can continue at will to come in.

You should first turn off the supply from the thank in the attic. Do so by tying up the bulb(float) in the attic with string. Then open the cold tap in the bathroom to lower the water.

this should allow you to examine the cistern free from water.

You can do these checks without turning off the supply but it gets messy and you need to be quick. Id say you better of turning it off.
