Replacing a seized caliper

Rear Caliper is seized on my partners Hyundai. How difficult is it to change a caliper? Disconnect brake fluid line and handbrake cable from caliper. Bolt off caliper, bolt on new one, reconnect line and handbrake cable, bleed the new caliper. Thats it right?

Was quoted silly money to get the caliper changed. The usual chain of places quoted over 500 to replace the caliper and both rear discs with pads.... The discs are fine and the pads have plenty of beef left on them. The NCT didn't fail on the discs, just the caliper. Why pay so much extra for parts the car doesn't need? They wont replace the caliper without doing both disks.... Why? Car is only worth about 1k.

I got quoted 60 Euro for a reconditioned caliper online, thats potentially all it would cost me if I'm doing it myself. Big differance compared to 500!

It's not difficult if you have the tools.
    Look on youtube for guidance.

Was the caliper seized on or off? If it was seized on then you will need rear discs and pads also due to excessive heat buildup. If the caliper was seized off then the discs and pads may be ok if replaced in the last couple of years but any longer than that and they are probably due, maybe post up a pic of the disc and we can say is it good or not?
As for the caliper id be wary of cheap. 120 is the minimum id expect to pay for a rear properly rebuilt hyundai caliper. There are many floating around that have just been blasted and new seals but the handbrake mech is untouched and that is where most of the problems lie.
Unfortunately repair prices don't come down with the value of the car so it doesn't really matter its only worth 1000, thats the bangernomics game :pac:

It's seized off. The disks look fine to me. You would be mad to spend over €500 getting a car repaired that's barely worth more then that. I will chance it and buy a recon caliper and fit myself.

60 sounds about right, I got one a few years ago for 70

Calipers don't tend to get seized off so now i'm very curious. What was the fail? Is the wheel a bit stiff to turn? Its down to you what you want to do with your own car but a garage would need to go by the book on a safety critical item like brakes.
Im interested to see a pic of the disc out of curiosity :)

A rear caliper for a hyundai (probably coupe)? 120 is the minimum for a good one

The local MF give you back around 40 quid if you return your old caliper. I paid 120 and got 40 back.

It appears to have seized off, I jacked up the car and the wheel spins freely. I took the wheel off and tried to wind back the piston and it wont budge.. Its stuck solid.

Never knew that, my local motor factors quoted me 143 euro for one, that was one of a few different brands they had. They also had more expensive branded ones that went up to 260 euro. They all looked identical. 143 seems reasonable for a brand new caliper? Maybe Ill ask them if they will give me anything back for my old caliper. But if a recon one for 60 does they job then I'm all up for that to.
