If you have Virgin Media, ate you supposed to be able to pause, rewind, record etc? My father has Virgin media. The box is labeled "UPC mediabox HD"

His remote has a pause, play, record buttons etc but he can't use any of these functions. Does access to these features depend on your account type?

That's a non recordable box your father has, He would need a recording box - Cisco (DVR) or a Horizon.

The Thomson Mediabox is an SD DVR, I would have assumed the HD version could also record. I had one as a secondary box here before. They may go as far as to lock out the record features if you don't pay for them.

There’s no seperate charge for PVR feature now, though the OP’s father may be on a legacy plan. But my recollection is that all UPC Mediaboxes have a remote with the PVR controls regardless of whether or not they actually have PVR features, because (apart from record obviously) they are used for On Demand content.

And even having a Horizon box gives no guarantees of being able to do it if my Horizon box is anything to go by.
It's an awful piece of equipment to use. On my 3rd replacement Horizon box now.

Must check out his plan. To be honest I'd be shocked if this wasn't a standard feature on every plan! Seems archaic in this day not to be able to have basic features like pause, rewind, record. He's had the box a few years but had his router upgraded a while back and I just assumed they updated his whole system. Obviously not. He has the white Hub 3.0 router now.

I just want to make sure he's not being ripped off and left with substandard equipment but paying for more. Thanks for the replies.

As i said your Father has a non recordable box. You would need to get a recordable box - nothing to do with plans.

Do Virgin not issue these to customers as part of their service? Just asking as I genuinely don't know anything about their service, I'm a freesat user.

The main box should have a hard drive and be capable of pausing the program that you're currently watching as well as recording programs. But for a bedroom, it's not necessarily a good feature. They gave me one with a HDD to replace a broken silver Pace box and it used to spin up 4 a.m. to check for a s/w refresh and woke me up. Explaining my problem to their call centre and convincing them that I wanted a box with no HDD nearly drove me demented!

Your main box can be any type off box especially if you've been a Customer for a number off years. Some people like the non recordable because the box is the smallest in size but of course you don't have the record facility.

You can ring and they may offer to send out a new box via Courier and he will collect old box. Make sure your clear what type off box you want. Not sure if charge or not.
