Ford Focus handbrake gone?

    Hi,

So I just bought an 2008 ford focus MK2. For the handbrake to engage I have to pull it up to the very last bite. If I go even one bite down the car will move and a screeching sound when it moves. Is the handbrake gone or is that normal?

Could be any one of a few things. There is slack in the handbrake cable and it needs adjusting, your handbrake shoes could also be worn and need to be replaced. Have a mechanic look at it.

Ok would this be a quick job where I can run down to a mechanic and he can do it within 20 mins?

Adjusting the handbrake cable should be a quick enough job but replacing the brake shoes would involve a bit more time and labour. If adjusting the cable doesn't work then the brake shoes would be the next place I'd be checking.

In the mean time (I.e can’t get to the garage) put the car in the gear too. I know someone who had the same problem with a 405 in the early 2000s and he was in a rush one day and thought it had it fully pulled. Car roll and hit the gable end of someone’s house. Of course remember you have it in gear first.
