Overcoat Style

I wear a suit into work everyday, but have never invested in a decent overcoat, but now is the time for me mature my fashion sense!

However, I am a bit clueless when it comes to fashion!

Any advice on what to look out for when buying one?

I usually wear dark suits, i.e. dark navy, grey or charcoal. I am also not sure about the whole full length or 3/4. I usually associate full length with older or more distinguished types...not sure I can pull that off :pac:

A good overcoat is essential when coming into the winter months. Its a smart addition to the wardrobe and, chosen well, can really compliment a good suit.

With the colours you typically wear I'd suggest black or grey overcoat. M&S have a decent range but if you're looking to splash the cash a little then have a look at Charles Tyrwhitt.

Have you thought about a trench coat? ASOS do them for very reasonable prices - very smart look.

I'd go with a nice camel coat as it won't match anything, but it will complement everything if you get what I mean. A colleague recently got a nice one in Ted Baker, although it was quite expensive.

    Whats your budget?

This was exactly the style I was about to suggest - although I was going to say "black" as it more or less goes with anything (I do like the camel one as well, 'though).

You can find some of these in M&S as suggested without breaking the bank, or at least without disintegrating it :)

One thing - go try a couple on and bring one of your suit jackets, it's not a give that the coats will fit well on it!

Thanks for the replies so far.

I was out shopping yesterday and started to have a look. Have seen some nice camel coats, but not sure I can pull it off. I tend to prefer darker colours.

Just a question about the length, bot from what I have tried on and the Ted Baker one linked; I think I would prefer it to be more knee length. I feel that mid thigh stops too short.

Are knee length overcoats more traditional and mid thigh ones more of a current trend?

'Shorter' overcoats would be very much the fashion at the moment but I'd say you're better sticking to ~ knee length. Full length overcoats would be very rare these days.

Depending on work environment etc, perhaps broaden your search to include tweed overcoats - I have this coat in a different colour (brown) and the number of compliments I've had on it is unreal (something that rarely happens otherwise believe me!).

The coats linked already on this thread are great looking coats, but are making a bit of a statement. You have to be confident enough to pull it off, I reckon.
Nothing wrong with pushing yourself out there a bit, of course, but a good solid dark coloured overcoat can be pretty timeless, and go with a lot of things. Something like this

I have a wool coat, similar to this, in a dark grey. Bought it years ago. I don't wear a suit to work, but it's a great coat to have in your wardrobe.

Bit shiny for me... looks like a tobacco colour, not nice.

M&S do a really nice camel coat, I have one at home prepped for the winter months.

I've worn these kinds of coats for a few years, but one from Selected Homme I got 4 years ago aside, they're never warm enough. Can anyone recommend a brand or coat like this, or even one with a slightly more military look, that also does the job in winter?

I like this coat. Not sure if it's what your looking for. Not formal, but not-not formal either. Imagine not enough for the cold months...

Something like this is pretty classic and can look really well with a suit and be used with more casual fair at the weekend
