    Hi All

My sister's 09 A4 2l diesel started pi$$ing white smoke out of the exhaust a few days ago.

Got it towed to Audi sandyford who have said the turbo is gone and it'll be 2400e to fix..

Seems like an outrageous amount to me but i ain't no mechanic. Just looking for opinions on the price and whether shed be able to get it done cheaper elsewhere?

That's normal pricing from a main dealer which are for brand new parts fitted at main dealer labour rates, these prices are the same whether the car is 9 days old or 9 years old and having a 9 year old car repaired at a main dealer rarely makes financial sense. Find yourself a good independent garage who can determine what caused the turbo to fail in the first place and look at sourcing a reconditioned turbo a lot cheaper.

Cheers bazz, any garages in Dublin you'd recommend?

Should she present the car as it is or tell them that Audi have said it needs a new turbo?

Sorry I'm not from Dublin so cannot recommend any place there. I'd certainly mention it to the other garage what the main dealer diagnosed as the problem but I'd still expect a good independant will do their own prognosis before quoting a price on repair work.

Just an update here folks. New mechanic reckons it's not the turbo. He's fairly sure it's the egr system?

He's blocked/bypassed the issue for now and given me back the car. Wants me to drive it for the next few days as normal and provided it's still running fine by Friday he'll then replace the system for 450e.

Seems like a steal after Audis input!

Any opinions on this good or bad?

    Cheers

If you have no more white smoke and normal engine performance he's probably correct

I'd be emailing the dealer who originally mis-diagnosed the turbo problem and telling them that they need to re-train their mechanics before they rip anymore people off and cc Audi Ireland in the email. If they have a Facebook page, I'd also post there.

Yeah I'm unsure as to whether Audi are incompetent or gangsters.

They're just following standard training. Read error codes and replace parts indicated by the manual.

But in this case sounds like they would have replaced the wrong part. I'd 100% be back onto the Audi dealer to complain.

It would be a waste of time, that happens day in day out in the main dealers. Wrong part sorry didn't fix your issue but pay anyway.... might be the ecu: another €1500 please but that also might not work... but hey i'm not complaining we get serious work out of it :)

The mechanics would be on about 28 k per year. They won't really care

    They're not mechanics anymore...They call themselves "technicians ' !!

Has the car had the emission recall done?
If it hasnt , send the car in for the recall .They are meant to give you a 2 year warranty on the egr and the injectors/injection pump. Then get them to replace the EGR valve inder goodwill/warranty

    Erm…. no

When I went back to Audi with very expensive parts they mis-sold due to wrong diagnosis, they were happy not to charge, the parts were originally ordered through my mechanic who has an account with Audi which probably helped.

Also one of the parts was the primary BCM which cost €600 not €1500
