    Hi guys
My 2007 toyota corolla 1.4 d4-d with 235000 on the clock breaks down on the way to nct retest failed on corrosion on break line. Everything else was perfect score. I now look like gearbox or clutch has failed car made a rubbing noise before i stopped car sound like something falling down and rubbing off wheel then car will not go out of gear engine running normal. I have had the car for almost 10 years never let me down same parts in it bar servicing filters discs and pads even had gearbox oil changed stuck with the service every 15k.
Now with costs coming the delema of do i fix and keep going or do i change car now. If gearbox is gone i will probably need to do clutch also as with high mileage. What would you guys do?
    Thanks

Update confirmed gearbox failure so now the delema do I fix or change car. Car will need clutch replaced aswell so up to 1500 car only worth this and potential for more issues as all original parts as have had car for almost 10 years with 234k km on car serviced every 15k km.

1500 would be too much for me. If I could get it back on the road for 750 maybe id consider it. 1500 euro will go a long way towards a really decent second hand car.

Surely you can pick up a gearbox from a Breakers for around €250. Another €170 for a clutch kit and €180/200 or so Labour. Even going up a bit it shouldn't cost you more than €650 to get sorted.

edit; Have you the older (up to mid '07) or newer model (available from around Jan '07) ? I'd guess you would get a Gearbox for very reasonable money for the older model, and a Clutch kit (even from micksgarage) is €150 for the earlier car and €175 for the newer model.

Might not need another gearbox depending on what's wrong with the one he has, also you wouldn't know what you'd be buying. €1500 seems very high.

I do agree that his own 'box could well be repaired.
But with the mileage on the car (and obviously the 'box) and the fact that it would take another few days to get it looked at and repaired I would go with a 'box from a Breakers. That's just my own personal opinion.

Also agree that €1500 is far too steep for the job.

I’d buy a freshly n.c.t.’d Toyota worth in and around the €1500 if I were you.

There is ONE Ad on Donedeal for a 2017 1.4D Corolla. Over 300,000miles and an expired NCT....for €1,700.
I'd fix the one I have OP.

Thanks for all replys its the new shape same parts as auris. I see lots of issues now about bad bearings in gearbox so secondhand scrap one may have same issues or last short time. The 1500 was a wild guess as they dont know prices of anything yet. When asked the mechanic was not sure and gave 3 prices on each

The bearings can be replaced prior to them failing. There are reconditioned boxes available from some breakers/parts suppliers. I dunno how much one would cost though.
    for example:

Ok guys shopped around for gearbox best price breakers is 500 could only find 2 clutch is 200 and up to 300 labour most gearbox repair say my gearbox would cost up to 420 plus shipping if they can repair and its 3 month warranty. From my research this car has weak gearbox so breaker one could need overhall aswell. I am now thinking 1000 plus for repair is too much for such a gamble. What price is it worth as is sell like this and buy a reasonably new car around 2015 i do 25k km a year mainly on motorway to and from work but now i need something as reliable and not too expensive to maintain.

I'd say fix it if the engine and other components have been good to you so far and not given you grief.

I saw a few of the older 06 shape ones go to 600k on the same engine.

Better the devil you know than the one you don't if you plan on keeping it for another while.

We had three of these in my house.

I had the older model and my parents each had a newer one.

Mine went, my mothers went but my father heard off someone to try the next thickest grade of gearbox oil up from the recommended and has not had any issues and has exceeded the mileage of the other two before they went bust.

Ya saw some of the prices on donedeal for this car so i decided to fix her up as its been great and i drive on mainly motorway so it should keep it going for a while yet.
