Used Honda Insights

    Hi,
    I was looking at used Honda Insights, 2010 (€6K and 52K miles) or 2011 (€7K and 128 K miles).
I know very little about hybrids, from a lay-man's perspective, the fact that there are 2 engines - does this mean that more can go wrong?
Does the Honda Insight have a good reputation for reliablity?
Is there a guide on what to look out for with regard to the battery part of a hybrid when buying a used car?
Finally, do the above Insights look like good value?
    Thanks in advance
    S

It's just one engine really. With Honda hybrids, you're essentially replacing the clutch/flywheel with a DC motor-generator, which also starts the engine. The motor is certainly a lot more reliable than any of those things in a traditional ICE car. Compared to a modern manual diesel, there is less to go wrong if anything.

I haven't heard anything particularly bad about reliability with the Insight, though it's slower and worse on fuel compared to the 3rd generation Prius, and the ride is worse.

The Civic Hybrid (2006-2011) and Civic IMA (2003-2006) have the same setup, but with bigger battery and more powerful motor. Ironically they're cheaper than the Insight to buy used, but that's probably because they don't look like a Prius.

Most Insights for sale in Ireland also appear to be Japanese imports, which means the infotainment system etc is in Japanese (and FM radio won't tune in all Irish stations, but will pick up your neighbour's cordless phone from the 1990s), and parts can be tricky to get hold of: there are often very small, unobvious differences in things like seat belts, suspension arms etc.

Personally I wouldn't bother with the Insight as a result, when a native Civic Hybrid/IMA is a better car all round (unless you absolutely need a hatchback).
