Job searching

Is there any site that’s best for applying for jobs or is it pot luck? I think I’ve signed up for pretty much all of them.

I’ve been job hunting for most of this year but, after being self employed for 3 years, I find places don’t take me seriously. The best I’ve found so far is a temp role that’s ending soon and there’s nothing else on the horizon. It’s been suggested that I dumb down my cv...I’m not sure how to even go about that as I spent so long trying to sell my skills in it.

I’m hoping to get into project management, I’ve some certification and plenty of working hours and am studying to up my accreditation.

When you sign up to Monster.ie and upload your cv, they will do a review of your CV, I would suggest doing that as it can be quite helpful.

Have you been in touch with anyone who can help with your CV? If your CV is badly laid out, or has too much information etc you will be at a disadvantage. There's loads of templates out there for free that are quite useful.

Also get in contact with various recruiters, some agencies are better than others but they can help with getting roles that you may not see on the major job sites.

One other thing, when applying for a particular role, make sure your CV contains key words contained in the spec for that role.

If your CV returns key words that match the job role, it will help with your chances in being picked for an interview

I’ve done, and do all of the above. I’ve limited each job description so keep it clear and concise, and tweak each and every application/cover letter. Recruiters say they are happy with my first view generic CV layout, and I’ve asked for loads of feedback on it as well as researching best practice techniques for a better CV.

Are you sure the problem is your CV and cover letter?

Are you making it to interview, but they reject you at interview?

Or is it a case of your CV have loads of management experience, etc., but you are applying for entry roles?

    Something doesn't add up here.

I’m not making it to interview. The one time I did, (current temp role), they were so impressed I was offered the job there and then. I can nail an interview. Application wise I’m aiming for my skill level, maybe something a little higher if I feel it’s a role I can get my teeth into. I’ve been told it’s the self employed years because no-one can vouch for my work ethic (despite having great customer reviews). I do realise somethings not adding up, but I don’t know what it is. It’s been suggested, by a corporate recruiter friend, that a lot of the roles I’d be applying for are dummy roles designed to bring in CV’s to put on file, (because the that’s what she does, but she’s London based)

It’s hard to know, and I don’t like speculation, but also the amount of that places that never reply when you submit an application is amazing too! Absolutely fair enough when they say at application phase they may not have time due to logistics etc, but overall it’s nice to get a reply even if it’s a generic “sorry, not this time”.

Are you applying for project management roles?

    Or admin / junior roles?

What is your project management certification?

Currently Fetac level 6 PMP certification, I’m sitting the CAPM certification hopefully before the year is out. Have to build study and work hours for PMP exam applications. I’m also struggling agile, and will probably work on Prince 2 because everywhere insists they want something different. I’m applying for project management/project administration roles. I don’t apply for junior roles but sometimes admin if there is a potential path for growth or a chance to gain more project management experience.

Have you tried applying to tech startups? Perhaps they would give you a chance.

I have, in fact I love getting stuck into early days kind of work, getting things off the ground. It’s convincing someone to give me a shot I struggle with. Though I hadn’t tried that site you mentioned yet, will check that out now!
