What exactly is a 'civil service' job?

What career area would you be working in? Is it mainly an 'office' based job or is the 'civil service' an umbrella term for many different jobs? If so, what kind of jobs are in this category?

    Is it well paid?

Do you need specific qualifications to be eligible for such jobs? What about 'experience'? Or can anybody literally walk in off the street into a job like that, and be trained 'on - the - job' ?

    Thanks.
