Petrol or diesel / Most reliable car in size range of a Corolla up?

    Hi,
I am looking to buy a 2010 or 2011 car - around the size of a Corolla up - Corolla, Avensis, Passat etc.

I want it to last 10 years.

I only do 10K-15K miles per year, so probably don't need a diesel, but most of the second hand cars for sale are diesels!
I am not too bothered about comfort, appearance etc.

    A few questions:
Will a diesel be more likely to last 10 years than a petrol?
What is most reliable car - in the size bracket of a Corolla up?

    Thanks in advance,
    S

I have the same problem with petrol versus diesel. Dont necessarily want a diesel but most old (7 years up) cars are diesel.
I think the most reliable car is a toyota, probably diesel.

A petrol Corolla would be more reliable than diesel, that’s not to say a diesel corolla is unreliable, just inherently more complicated and not suited to some driving.

Civic 1.8 saloon would be up there as one of the most reliable.
