No offence, Ruby, but I think you and your daughter are coming at this the wrong way (and Career Portal seems to think the same! :D)

What is your daughter interested in / what does she want to do?

Ok, the LC subjects she has chosen suggest a general interest in the Life Sciences / Food Sciences, but that could lead her to an absolutely huge range of options from doctor / nurse to Home Ec teacher to chef to agricultural technician to vet or something in the pharmaceutical or food sciences line .... and that's only a quick few off the top of my head, there's hundreds more ...

And indeed many courses won't care what optional subjects she chose for LC once she gets the relevant points.

So far better to get her thinking about what she might like to do than to get too caught up with the subjects she has chosen, though as I said her subjects do suggest at least a broad area which she has some interest in.

I agree. Just for medicine two science subjects (biology/physics/chemistry) are needed (or used to be anyway) so if that is still the case it rules out just medicine and also veterinary as careers as chemistry is needed for that.

Galway, RCSI and UCD accept one science for the 6 year course in Med, the 5 year courses all require two. ;)

You could be right re: vet, I don't know tbh ... still leaves vet nurse.

That explains that so, I remember there being something about medicine needing two but wasn’t sure of the exact information! Chemistry definitely needed for veterinary.

The two things to consider are- what career is she interested in and roughly what points might she achieve. Have a look at this years CAO offers (online or in Monday’s newspapers) and you’ll get a feel for which courses have highest points. As others have said some courses like veterinary and pharmacy require chemistry so be mindful of that. Some universities do general (undesignated) science courses where you pick a range of subjects so that might suit her if she’s unsure of her career path.

If she likes science, she could do a general science degree. Generally in year 2 or 3 you specialise. So her first year would be figuring out which bits she likes the most.

You can see here there are consistently lots of science vacancies in Ireland: https://countyjobs.ie/statistics?daterange=last-36-months&categories%5B%5D=18
