Son went to get his first licence yesterday. All paperwork ok, theory passed etc.
Issued with a receipt and a driver number.
Can he now go ahead with driving lessons or does he have to wait the 5-10 days to receive the actual card in the post?

Essentially the learner permit application must be approved prior to being issued yet. He won't be a learner permit holder until he's holding the learner permit.

Similar question here, going to assume similar answer, I will be applying for full licence in next few weeks after passing test, I can't do it with work at the moment and next appt is sep 6. Can I drive after applying before getting card? Does it really take ten working days the first time?

Also on insurance, the process of buying a car from a dealer and getting insurance first time how long a time frame does it take to being able to drive it legally?

No, he can’t start lessons. As he isn’t yet a learner permit holder he’s not covered by insurance. I’d be very careful of an instructor who take your son out, and there are some out there!

I had my appointment for mine on Friday right before they closed and got a text yesterday morning saying the card has been dispatched so it probably won't take 10 days for his to come.

You can drive as you were before with your learner permit as that is valid until it expires it or you receive your full licence. Your application for full entitlement must again pass muster so you won't hold full entitlements until your application is processed and approved.

One example is there have been cases where people have passed the test after receiving driving bans but not surrendering the learner permit. If that person applies, the NDLS will root them out and the least that happens to them is they tear up their cert of competency.

Really, the only one who can advise you on insurance is the insurance company in question. The company is bound by legislation to a large extent but much of their rules are company policy which varies vastly. You should always check out insurance matters with the company in question.

Applied for the full license on Saturday, it arrived in the post the following Friday. They process them very quickly.

You don’t have to have an appointment, if you are willing to wait, you can turn up at and NDLS Centre and queue. I didnt book an appointment before I passed my test as I didn’t want to jinx it.
