Mileage discrepancy

    Hi all,

I'm currently looking into a car sold by a main Citroen dealer and covered by Citroen 12 months comprehensive warranty which is also valid in Ireland (Checked the car in the official Citroen site for used cars and it confirms the warranty), however the dealer told me that there is no service history with the car and that the last service was done 2 years ago as the car has done less than 14 miles in the past 2 years (Service interval is either 2 years or 14k miles based on the dealer).

I decided to pay for a vehicle check for peace of mind and got results that there is mileage discrepancy. Link to screenshot.

The car had 12k miles on 01/08/2016 then was reported as having 45k miles on 14/09/2016 and then 11k miles on 27/09/2016.

The latest mileage recorded is 46k on 14/06/2018.

This means that the car has done 35k miles in the past 2 years without any service as the dealer is telling me that the vehicle has been last serviced in August 2016 due to "service intervals".

    What do you think?

Should I tell the dealer about this and see what they'll say?

One thing I'm sure of is that the vehicle background check that I did was well worth the money :)

    Thanks!

Looking at that screenshot I'm thinking the 45,000 & 46,000km entries are mistakes - what car is ever serviced at EXACTLY a multiple of Kms

    Secondly - on the 8th Jan 2016 it's 10,180Km, on 1st Aug 2016 it's 12,629Km the it jumps 32,371Kms in a month & half. I don't think that's even physically possible.

Ignoring the 45/46,000Km entries I would be very worried about the 12,629 DOWN to 11,954Kms. I would very querying that one closely although it's such a small amount it wouldn't be worth clocking it for that

The car's current mileage (based on a photo of the dashboard of the car) is 47900 Miles, therefore there is a jump from around 11k to 47900k miles in 2 years (Over 36k miles difference) and no service done.

This car is covered by Citroen 12 months comprehensive warranty and it's is sold by a main dealer and will be serviced and MOTed before I buy it. Would this be enough to guarantee that the car will be in a good mechanical condition and therefore just ignore the mileage and missing service history?

I shared the screenshot with the dealer and this is his reply :

"There is nothing wrong with the mileage, it looks like the manufacturer has entered the wrong miles at the time from the previous visit, seems to be a recall that has been carried out, miles are genuine and guaranteed"

    What do you think?

Walk away. And report the dealer to whatever authority is in UK. Maybe Trading Standards, There is no way, imo, that a car with that kind of fluctuating milage could be genuine.

You've not bought it and are already questioning it. It's not a rare model, plenty of choice out there.

    Run away

I think the servicing is the least of the issues here. Going from 12 to 45 to 11 to 46 is the big issue here. Even if the 45k and 46k were entered in error, how does it go from 12k to 11k?

Or from 12k to 45k in 6 weeks? That 5500 miles per week. Or where has the car been for the last two years if it only put up 1000 miles going from 45 to 46???

Had to google BVRLA. So the rental and leasing authority in the UK. They've entered the first three values which look reasonable enough. Then there are 3 figures that don't fit after that and no service history for that period. It's not hard to find a car in the UK with service history, I'd be steering well clear of this one. So many questions about those numbers.

The fact you're questioning it says it all.. yes admin errors happen but not like that. It's one I'd be walking away from.

Why do people insist on chasing cars with dubious histories.
Cars are plentiful unless it’s something rare your after.

Walk away from this, something isn’t right. There are literally hundreds if not thousands of every model of car for sale out there, there is no need to buy something with a suspect history.

Sure the Irish love a bargain.

As seen with classic cars. You often see a car that is fit for the scrap yard being bought up for more than it's worth needing a fortune spent on it while a mint original example will be ignored because it costs more (in reality it's far cheaper)

Well the fact that it was sold by a main citroen dealer and was listed in citroen's official site https://www.usedcars.citroen.co.uk/ together with a 12 months comprehensive warranty valid in Ireland had me interested at first :)

But i'm now looking elsewhere due to the mileage and service issue.
