My inlaws are having issues with Wi-Fi in their house which is limiting upgrades for smart devices/ bulbs etc.

The Wifi in the house is provided by two BT home plugs.
The Wi-Fi drops randomly causing connection issues

The main router is in a garage/workshop due to security system and some other issues.
The garage/workshop is not attached to the house.

Are home plugs the best solution to bring the signal into the house ?
Should they upgrade from BT homeplugs to different ones ? Any recommendations ?

This question is probably best answered over on the Broadband forum.

The best option would be to bring the internet and router into the house.

If definitely not an option, then next best option would be to run an ethernet cable between the house and the garage.

The setup would be something like:
    - Phone line coming into garage.
    - ISP supplied router acting as a modem only in garage.
    - Security system connected directly to the ISP supplied modem.
    - Ethernet cable running from the garage to the house.
    - A quality third party router in the house.

Note if you do this, you need to get ethernet cable rated for outdoor use and might want to get an electrician to do it due to issues around grounding.

If that is all too much, if the router they are using is the ISP supplied one, you could try just buying a better third party router to put in the garage. Higher quality routers generally have much better range and performance to the crap cheap ones the ISP supplies.

Another option is a wireless mesh system. This would put one wireless router in the garage and a second one in the house. I'd recommend a tri-band one like the Netgear Orbi ones.

BTW to be honest, it is generally a bad idea to put the security system in a garage. It would be better to move it and the wifi router into the house.

Seeing as the home plug devices you have are providing WiFi only, and its just purely WiFi you want in the house, then an external router on the shed pointed towards the house may well give you WiFi inside the house.

Either that or you could do a back to back WiFi solution to get you WiFi backhaul into the house and feed off of that.

If done this for a relative, the external WiFi antenna/WAP was abut 50 to 70 metered away from the house. If he wanted cable.internet connecttion, then it was just a matter of adding another unit inside the house.
