SIRO FTTH

I am currently with a well known provider on a 240Mb package (have a guess) and the latency experience with the equipment makes online gaming, all but unplayable or a source of frustration.

VF via SIRO called to the house a few weeks ago, offering 1Gb/s, etc, but they guy had not clue in relation to latency (I assume he's on commission) other than to keep banging "But it's one-gigabit!!". It's not the bandwidth that I need, but relatively low latency. My current provider is suffering the Puma Chipset issue.

Can anyone comment who has SIRO FTTH?

Your issue with VM is likely due to being on the Hub3.0 which is the subject of a class action due to its inadequacy. Even with some of their better older equipment DOCSIS is inherently slower due to the design of the protocol. GPON (SIRO and OpenEir FTTH) will be (8ms vs 25ms kinda ranges) and won't suffer from the exceedingly poor equipment.

The 1TB cap is a big caveat though.

A friend of mine has both Virgin 360 (which he is about to cancel) and SIRO 1000 Mbit/s connection from a different provider than Vodafone.

He's got 2ms on SIRO speedtests, 15ms on Virgin speedtest, so there's a difference of over 10ms.

Quality can also differ a bit between the different SIRO providers due to whatever router they use and what their infrastructure is like, but it's overall a lot lower latency than Virgin. Also, a lot of the SIRO providers don't filter, like Virgin does. Something that can be really annoying.

As ED E pointed out, some of the providers have a 1TB cap like Vodafone or Digiweb.

That's a business one. And it's not using Vodafones router. It's on a Routerboard 1100AHx4. The guy that has that line still has the Vodafone router in the sealed box, if anyone wants a doorstop :)

Thats the CPU in your router crashing and performing a purge before starting to route again. Its wonderful

As ED E says FTTH does seem ideally suited to you if you can live with the 1TB cap.

We're consuming about 700-800GB per month, so the 1TB isn't really an issue. Honestly with VM, streaming services (e.g. netflix, etc) are all ok. It's just the realtime stuff, skype calls, gaming, etc that's an issue.

I'll now start the search for the best provider :)

    Go here: https://siro.ie/roll-out/

Click on your county on the right, the the area you are in.

It will list the providers available for that segment and also one of their offerings with pricing + a link to their pricing.

Hmmn this is interesting. I thought I'd be close to the 1TB cap but looking at my VM history the highest I've been in the last few months is 170GB. I stream a few movies via Now TV and have a few IP cameras so I think 1TB should be loads.

What's the router like from Digiweb, Vodafone? I was a Digiweb customer years ago and never had any issues.

Vodafone supplies a Huawei piece of s*** that's only useful as a doorstop.

Digiweb supplies an AVM Fritz!Box, which is a fairly high end router.

What's the main difference? I have the F2000 on FTTH from Eir which is Huawei and it seems ok/does the job.

That depends on what you need. If you're happy with that, that's fine.

    - The Wi-Fi on that is crap.
    - If you want to set more advances NAT rules, you can't.
    - If you want to use alternative VoIP providers, you can't

And so on. It's extremely locked down.
