Ones a main dealer and one isn’t.

The gap in the boot shut lines on that Avensis look very wide to me and bumper seem to be hanging a bit at one side which would suggest it was a poor damage repair. They are both terrible base specs anyway, I'd hate to be spending time in either. Keep looking would be my view.

How do I know if a car being described is a base spec?

generally if there are no alloys and no air con, you can be pretty sure its the base spec.
Do a bit of research on sites like Parkers or Which Car so you know what to look out for and what equipment comes as standard in which spec.

Generally the base ones don’t have alloys. On an Avensis you’ll still get stuff like air conditioning. Only Luna model Corolla gets aircon.

Base spec on a Corolla is Terra. Strata adds alloys and front fogs. Luna adds aircon, leather wheel with controls, armrest, rear electric windows.

Avensis Aura would be similarly specced to Corolla Luna. Avensis Strata gets nice stuff like cruise control, self dimming mirror, elec folding mirrors etc. Base spec on Avensis I s also Terra.

    Toyota specs are as follows:

    E < Terra < Aura < Strata < Luna < Luna Sport < Sol.

So E is the worst and Sol is the best (E and Strata are no longer used).
