Bitter

I'm partial to a pint of Caffreys or John Smiths when I'm in the UK. Is there any chance of finding something equivalent on draft in Ireland. The craft beer movement doesn't seem to have really hit this category yet or not over here anyway.

Would Kilkenny be an option? Hard to find it these days.

Are you anywhere near any of the Wetherspoons pubs? They'll usually have a selection of bitters on cask/draft.

Wetherspoons is a good shout they've a branch in Limerick not too far from me. Didn't occur to me they'd have it I'll have a sconse.

I remember when Kilkenny was launched in the late 90's and was available pretty much everywhere but by the time I'd turned 18 it'd completely disappeared.

Smithwicks would be the closest you’d find in most pubs in Ireland. But I prefer the bitter you get in the UK, ie, Nitrogen and not CO2.

The taste is similar but the consistency of the nitrogen in the ale is what I like best.

Just googled to see if you can drink kilkenny in kilkenny not clear. It did suggest however a Black & Tan. Just as disgusting sounding as you'd think.

    Agreed.

Also don't call it a black and tan in Ireland!

It hit it and then abandoned it. I've been badgering the Porterhouse to bring back TSB but they're not keen, saying Dublin Pale is good enough (it's not). Dungarvan has rebadged Comeragh Challenger as something other than a bitter, but I'm sure it's still a bitter. And Franciscan Well brings Purgatory back the odd time. Of recent offerings, Crafty Bear's C'mere T'eme did a very good impression of English bitter despite being badged as an amber ale.

No Wetherspoons in Limerick. Closest is Cork. The rest (in RoI) are in Dublin.

Ah you're right I was thinking of McGettigans

Yellowbelly have an Extra Special Bitter out at the minute, but that's probably not really what you're after either.
