    Hi all,
Im curious to know if ayone has had an endoscopy without sedation and just the throat spray.
I am due to have one and I would prefer not have sedation due to the fact I would not like the feeling of it and I would prefer be able to go home after the procedure
I am generally an anxious person and I am nervous about having the procedure but I most defiently do not want any drugs that make me drowsy or unaware...

I asked if they allow general anesthic so I would be completly asleep but I was told the only offer sedation or throat spray.

If you have had one in Ireland without sedation can you please tell me your experience?
What did it feel like and was it bareable?

    Thanks

If you are anxious, then go for sedation. I have had one with and one without, I'd never go without again. I'm not a panic type person, but it's not a pleasant sensation if you are fully awake. You can certainly go home after, you will be observed for a bit and won't be able to drive though.

When you woke up what was the side effects from the sedation ?

When I woke up fully, I was fine. I was probably fully alert within an hour, but wasn't allowed to drive.

I had two, both without sedation.

You need a good swallow to get the camera past your throat.
You will reech a fair bit particularly as they pump in extra air doing biopsies, I had quite a few done the first time.

It’s a strange feeling as they move around and further down, you feel it allot.

Slow, long steady breathing to keep calm and still.

Plenty of reaching again then they are removing it, followed by plenty of trapped wind.

The spray for your throat tastes like I’d imagine a sweaty ass taste like.

I had one without sedation. It was ok, not a nice experience but totally bearable. They spray your throat and getting the camera through your swallow/gag reflex is the hardest but once it's down its ok.
Then just stay calm, breathe deeply so you don't gag and it takes maybe 5 /10 mins.
Sensation is unpleasant when the camera is down there but I dislike the thought of being sedated.

Yes thats the same for me Ifeel more anxious about been sedated than the procedure. I just hope I could manage it awake.

Do you feel like your chocking through the whole procedure?

Some people I know said been sedated isnt a nice feeling either.

I’d go again without, wouldn’t look forward to it, but I felt it ok.

Suppose 15 minutes from leaving ward to getting back.

I had it done in Cavan General and the staff were awesome, they made a difficult procedure bearable and recovery afterwards pleasant and no rush to leave, got tea and toast.

I had an endoscopy and a colonoscopy in the one sitting. I was told I would be sedated but aware of my surroundings. I knew absolutely nothing about it. It was great. I wouldn’t have it any other way. I got a train home to KK from Dublin a couple of hours later on my own.
If he was using the same camera I hope he did the endoscopy first :)

Yes I know what you mean.
Is the tube big the put down and did you get to watch the screen on what was happening?

    Ha Ha...
I know some people who have been sedated for other medical treatments and they said sedation was a horrible feeling. The were kind of out of it but still awake and unable to move?

Had one without the sedation as I had to drive afterwards. I found it fine little embarrassing in that the air they pump in to get the views had me burping like mad all over the nurses. ( they seen it all before ). Had me on my side so I could watch it on the screen. Once it was done and the scope removed I just had a slight discomfort for few hours like as if I had been shouting.
If you can afford to be sedated go for it for the ease and comfort.

Yes consultant talked me through what was happening and showed me problems on screen.
But with teeth guard in and tube in your mouth it’s not place for much discussion.

The tube is thick enough, you can feel it in your throat all the time and as more is fed in you feel it all the way down.

I don’t sicken or reech at much so I was reasonable sure I would manage.

My friend tried and just couldn’t swallow past back of his mouth, just couldn’t do it no matter what and had to leave as he wasn’t prepared for sedation as he was driving.

I had it without sedation as I wanted to drive home afterwards.
It was awful, very unpleasant and uncomfortable.
Couldn't wait for it to end.
I would never have one again without sedation.
I find the sedation quite pleasant.
It has an amnesiac effect on you and you feel nice and sleepy afterwards.
All good as long as someone else is giving you a lift home!
