How long does it take for penalty points to be issued?

Hi

Just wondering how long it takes for penalty points to be issued if ya got caught speeding?

It may have got caught by a speed van 3 weeks ago today and I've heard nothing yet.

It was on a 100km/h road and I wasnt doing anymore that 103-105km/h. Basically, I just drifted over the speed limit before I spotted the van.

How long does it usually take for a letter to come out in the post?

Normally under 2 weeks. If it goes past 4 weeks it's a fairly safe bet you escaped.
That's without getting into the 'over-reading' of Car speedometers vs actual speed.

Afaik they're set at 10% above the limit to allow for discrepancies so you should be fine.

I heard there was a slight allowance but thought it would only be 2 or 3 km over the speed limit. 10% seems like a lot doesn't it?

What he means is many car speedometers will show a reading that's higher than your actual speed. Anywhere up to 10% above real speed is acceptable, it's done to ensure it never shows below your real speed.
If you have a smartphone there are apps you can download to check your speed and should be more accurate than the speedometer in the car. search gps speed on the app store to try it and see.

If the clock showed 105 there is a good chance you were actually doing something like 95.

The joyus things with penalty points is that you forget you may have been caught and then boom, 4 months later it arrives in the post! 90% of the time, should be within the month though

Rumour has it that the GoSafe Vans are certified to issue Fines for anyone 3km/h over the limit.
Whether a Fine is actually issued is down to the Back-office Crowd in Thurles....and whatever over the limit cut-off they actually use.

The reason its a % is because the faster the speed the more likely the speedometer, or the speed camera, will be out of alignment. 103km/h in a 100 would be nigh on impossible to prosecute in court.

Go safe vans have a very short range. Unless you only saw it as you were within 10m or passing and never slowed you should be fine.

Fsir chance you're ok, cars over read by around 5km plus the van will give you an allowance as well.
