2010 VW Golf high mileage, issues?

I’m looking to buy something around the €10,000 mark at present.

I spotted the Golf in the link. I suppose the concern is the mileage. Is it very high or something to worry about?

    https://m.carzone.ie/used-cars/Volkswagen/Golf-2-0-TDI-5DR-COMFORTLINE-140BHP-6-SPEED--NCT-TO-1-2/201805296953253

The garage is local enough to me and seems to have a good reputation which obviously is a plus.

Any other recommendations on something in my price range?
I’m more or less open to considering anything

I drive 500/600 miles a week so I suppose diesel would be the one thing that I’d have to include in my needs

Is that not very pricey? You’ll easily get 2012s for that money.
    For €1000 you’re into 2013 Mk7 Golfs.

Steer clear. That's too expensive for that mileage.

Ok. I’m not a car expert so I wouldn’t be certain if it’s overpriced or not. I guess year wouldn’t bother me once I was getting a good car

I was passing the garage last night when it was closed but I was able to go in for a look. The car looked in great condition, could hardly see a scratch on the body

It was just the mileage that stood out as maybe high. But I guess a lot depends on how well it’s been looked after

You can be sure a main dealer wouldn't be selling a car like that, with that age and mileage unless they knew it inside out and had good faith in it. I'd say you'd find it'll have a full history with them.

Probably not a bad car and capable of that mileage again if treated right. As above though value for money isn't great with it.

Thanks. I might give a phone call on Monday see what they say about it.

Any other recommendations more than welcome

The only upside is the assumed silver servud you’ll get for paying so much for an 8 year old car. The Mk7 is streets ahead of the Mk6 Golf, so try and get one of those.

Mileage isn't a concern, it's the other end of the market price wise, just for comparison here's a 2012 S40 for the same money.

Thanks. I know there’s probably better prices on DoneDeal etc. I suppose given my limited knowledge I’d like the peace of mind of a garage and the possibility of getting a problem sorted that might not be possible dealing with a private individual

A pity the Reg number isn't quite in shot anywhere. Be interesting to see if this car had the VAG emissions recall done (if applicable).
Personally, I'd rather buy one that didn't have the recall done.

If it’s a main dealer selling it, and it’s due the fix, you can be sure they’ve done it.

10k for a Golf that is approaching 9 years old is nuts.

I too would be very wary of pics that don't show the reg as it stops you performing a history check, and it seems to be done purposely too.

Steer clear would be my advice.

Disclaimer; I am coming from a very different position to you OP, I have always had an keen interest in motorcars from a very young age and have always enjoys buying cars privately. I don't however, possess any great technical or mechanical knowledge of motor cars. I have generally worked of my research and my gut. It's served me well to date in almost 20 years of car ownership!!
So bearing that in mind, I'll offer my thoughts.

Firstly; Coming on here asking for advice, I'd say take the advice of the the likes of colm, toyotafanboi etc have already offered very seriously. These guys, along with having a huge resevior of technical knowledge, understand the motortrade in Ireland. This is vital. To my mind, the Irish motortrade is excessively overpriced, but that's mainly due to the fact that I never really spend more than €10k on a car and I'm comfortable taking a leap of faith on a private purchase. Not everybody is. There are some very honest dealers selling genuine cars and whilst they may be a few euro more than the car on donedeal it is more than likely worth it for a buyer looking to totally minimise risk.

Secondly; I wouldn't necessarily be running away from a car with 130k miles on the clock. Your golf has clocked those miles up over an 8 year period so it's perfectly normal milage. If the car has been serviced regularly and shows no obvious signs of excessive abuse then it's worth considering. This obviously comes with the caveat of whether or not this particular example is troublesome or not. This is where the technical expertise comes in! I can't help you there I'm afraid.

Thirdly; I honestly think the Golf you have suggested is incredibly overpriced. It has had three owners and is a fairly standard spec. It is 8 years old. For comparison, I brought a 132 Superb in from the UK with a far superior spec albeit a potentially inferior engine but with 25k less miles for similar money. My advice would be to look at suggestions offered here and chat to friends etc.
I would be very confident you could pick up something for €10k that has at least 30k less miles and potientially only 1 previous owner.

The Golf 6 is a bit of a ham of a yoke though when compared to the 7, the 7 is an infinitely better car, much nicer interior, better reliability, far more gadgets as standard even on entry level cars and a much fresher design. The 6 isn't inherently a bad car or anything but if you sat in a 6 then sat in a 7 and they were the same price-ish, it'd be an easy decision.

Well I wont claim to know either too much about cars. But I do know I'd pay alot more for that 2ltr than that 1.6 diesel engine. I have relations with both. And the 2ltr is far superior

OP check out the bangernomics thread, there are some really great deals out there with older diesels, if you are prepared to drive an older car like a 2010. I picked up an 07 octavia estate for 850e with 200k and it's perfect, I didnt get lucky there are deals out there. Its only going to get better just a bit of time and knowledge put in would save you 1000s. Keep in mind the dealer won't be doing you any favours when you rock up to him with that golf at 200k on the clock and in the event of an accident you will get the market value on your car, I'd say book value on that car is 4500.
