So in my business books, how do I write off this loss of a few hundred euro? The software in question has turned out to be unsuitable with what I want to do.

very vague question, when you ask how can cost be written of are you self employed etc ? did you try to get in touch with software seller, presume its bigger brand name, is there any cool off period, worst case can you not just contact your bank or file dispute.

youd want to do trial in the future as most companies provide that before buying license.

Did you capitalise the purchase in your books, i.e., treat it as an asset?

If you just treated it as a business expense, then you don't need to do anything.
