    Hi,

I wanted to add a second sink in one of my bathrooms. I live in an apartment: do I need to ask for a permit? If yes what's the procedure I have to follow?

I already asked the management company and they are ok with it but the agent wasn't able to give me an answer to this question...

    Thanks,

    Aoife

Can't see why a permit would be required. A plumber will connect the new sink to the existing and they will drain via the same existing pipework all works will be complete within your bathroom. No need to approach anyone else ;)

My advice is to use tradesmen.ie and place an advert there for the work you want done. You will receive 4 professional quotes and then decide how you want to proceed! Best of luck.

    Management company and an agent?
Do you own the apartment or are you renting?

If you own the apartment, there shouldn't be any restrictions on doing anything inside the apartment itself. You may have issues if you're proposing to go through an external wall.

Your plumbing should be done to spec with the correct traps and an understanding of what's being connected to. You can cause a lot of issues by connecting inappropriately to shared foul water drainage. I've seen (smelled) issues with washing machines and dishwashers connected to standpipes without traps! These are what prevent sewer gasses and odours coming back into the building.

Check your deeds and contracts with the management company and so on.

If you're adding a second sink, you'll probably be sharing the waste and water connection with the existing sink anyway. It's not major plumbing.

If you don't own the apartment, you'd need to speak to your landlord as normally you cannot carry out any kind of changes to fixsture and fittings, including plumbing and electrical work.
