I know that premium vs Chinese has been done to death, but I stumbled across this video of worn premium, vs Brand new budget tyres.
    Just skip to 7.30min

I realise that it's all set up by Michelin... but all the same.. you're looking at a 7mm tyre being out performed by a 1.6mm tyre.

    Let the argument begin

That Michelin man has really let himself go.

While other tyre manufacturers recommend changing tyres below 3mm, Michelin are pushing quite hard at the moment that their tyres are performing well right up to legal limit of 1.6mm.

I wonder if the budget tyres have any mileage on them at all in that test. If they are brand spanking new then surely they need a bit of a wearing in. Even 50 or 60km before the rubber softens up somewhat.

I'm on my 4th set of Michelin tyres and they are by far the best I've ever used.
They will be my first choice next time too.

Damn was expecting to use my popcorn gif when coming into this thread, but no arguments... (yet)

But yeah, anyone that cheaps out on tyres, aka the only part of your entire car touching the road is crazy imo. I was chatting to my local garage about this not long back and he said it's amazing when he tells people they need new tyres the ONLY two questions asked is "how much?" and "whats the cheapest?"

That is not an average budget tyre or anything remotely close to scientific test. Just looking at the thread patern id say you struggle to find a worse performing road tyre in your avwrage tyre shop. The rubber also looks old and perished.
I have quality budget tyres on my focus and they are fine. Granted its a 110hp 1.8 diesel but i havent lost traction once in the 8 months they are on.

That is a very common pattern for chinese budgets. The tyre is new but has been scrubbed in to increase grip so the marks you are seeing actually help with its performance.
Budget tyres are grand when pootling around, you only find out there weaknesses when it really matters (hard braking, wet emergency cornering) Once you go premium you will never go back.
