Was out in a relatives garden in the West of Ireland in the afternoon around 4.30 a few days ago when I heard the distinctive call of a cuckoo. He called twice and then that was it. I have never heard a cuckoo call after June before. Did they decide to hang around a little longer due to the good weather in July?

Tracking shows most have already crossed the desert regions and none left here, so highly unlikely.

I heard a collared dove the other day, it called twice. The first call had two notes and nearly had me wondering, too, then the second call had three notes and I got my answer.

99% sure it wasn’t a collared dove as they are regular visitors to my feeder and there were no sign off any in the vicinity. Had a good scout around after I hear€ the call.
When I heard it I was practically frozen to the spot as I did think “ that can’t be” . It must have been somebody in the neighbours house messing I reckon. It was very convincing, unless another bird was mimicking.
