Auris 1.33 - which oil?

I'm looking at changing the oil in an '09 Auris 1.33 petrol. I know the recommended is 0W20, but since it's done over 100k miles would it be wise to use a thicker oil, like 5W30?

The service history is a bit of an unknown - I know the oil was changed last year, but no idea what was used. My concern would be putting in 0W20 now, only to see significant oil consumption. I'm not sure the (more expensive) 0W20 would make much difference either way?

I'd only use the recommended..if you're afraid that the engine will start burning the new proper specified oil. Well you clearly have other more serious problems.. using slightly heavier oil can starve parts of the engine when starting up from cold. This was very common with transit Van's 04 onwards and twin cams were starved of oil...don't whinge about getting a decent make of oil also as if you have to repair or replace the engine it'll be the most expensive gallon of oil ever.

Normally I'd use the recommended oil, and I don't know too much about this engine, but it's not unknown for Toyota petrols of this era to start burning a bit of oil once they get over 100k miles and some find this not a problem with 5W30. Even the local Toyota dealer will use 5W30 unless you specifically request 0W20. I'm not talking about using any old cheap muck :)

Well if mr Toyota uses it that's ok.. manufacturers are now going for lighter oil..our vw. cars and Van's at work all take 5w 30. But the bulk oil supplier now says its o/30 . I've been using the newer oil now 12 months and don't see any issue..sounds ok if Toyota garage uses it . They're probably known for taking a drop of oil that's fine too.

There might be minimal difference in fuel consumption between the two - you might get 2-3% better economy on the 0w20.

Just get 0W30 oil if it's cheaper. I always go for ACEA A3/B4 or C3 myself - it will have higher HTHS parameter (>3.5) which determines the ability of oil to resist degradation in higher temperatures (HTHS = High Temperature High Shear) .
