    Hi,

Need to do the timing belt on 2008 1.6 petrol mk2.

Taking to a mechanic says I dont need to change the water pump as its not fed by the timing belt. This will be the first time the water pump/timing belts been changed. The car has 94,000 km. He seemed to know what he was talking about.

Should the water pump be done or is it fine like the mechanic says.

Ah, well I got mine done on a 2006 Mk2 when I was getting my timing belt done @100k .

More for convenience really as they were in there and had access.

Yes, the water pump is independent from the timing belt so no need to do at same time, unless you want to save on labour.

Ok thats fair. If a water pump goes would it be obvious? I have zero car knowledge. Thanks

    Car overheats
You should be able to catch it beforehand though, often they make noise for a while.
It really depends on how it breaks.

You should be doing the water pump with the timing belt on these. Its not driven by the belt but its right in front of you when you have the timing belt off and they do give trouble so would be mad not to change it. Its not a 5 minute job once its all re assembled.
