So i had my car parked up for work yesterday and when leaving work i noticed a dent to the panel above the back driver side wheel. There is white paint all over the big dent. Luckily i have albeit a bad camera angle on my car for the whole day it was there so i get to look through camera footage.

If and when (perfect angle to get the reg) i get a reg number and footage can i go to the gardai?

To the idiot who did it, if your reading this just pm me and i wont go any further.

Also does anyone know how much a panel beater will cost? I bought the car 6 days ago ffs.

Of course you can go to the Gardaí, it would be classed as a hit and run, and once you have the footage it's very easy for them to investigate.

Absolutely go to the Gardai! The chances of that person being on boards is small so don't that delay your action. The person who hit your car could have left his/her details but chose not to. That is on them. Take pictures of the damage and don't go to a panel beater just yet.

How are you going to get the footage from the camera?

Its a work camera that i have access to

You are aware of GDPR regulations relating to viewing CCTV cameras? Even if it is a work camera that you have access to? If the person who hit your car becomes aware that the CCTV footage was obtained and used without Garda involvement (ie a request to view the CCTV) then your employer could be in the ****?

I guess that the other party could make a complaint under GDPR if they were so inclined, but I don't think the Gardai will be bothered if you give them the ten and say its on CCTV.

Or simply get them to come and view the cctv themselves.

Maybe have a look to see that the reg is actually on the camera so as not to waste their time, But definitely a better option to get them to come and look themselves.

Would it not matter as the car park is a public area? Besides if someone is scummy enough to do a hit and run I doubt they know the ins and outs of the GDPR..

They're exactly the ones that would know about it

The person responsible for security can view the camera footage

If they can confirm that the hit and run is indeed caught on camera, they or you can call the guards.

The Guards can come and view the footage and request a copy of the footage.

Is it a separate panel or the main chassis? Don't go to a panel beater on a new car, go back to the dealer and get it replaced. Once you can get the person that did it their insurance will cover whatever remedy you choose as long as it's reasonable.

I am indeed the responsible person for the cam operations. By having a quick look i cant see the incident happen so gonna have to watch it in a slower speed. But if i see it and can get the reg then i will be getting the gardai involved.

Just annoying that some jerk did it

Dont pull the footage from the camera

Ask the guards to come down and have a look, They will then request the footage.

Also get the footage from any relevant nearby cameras that would have seen them driving into the car park or from any other angles.

Main chasis unfortunately. Gonna be costly. The car is new as in i just bought it but its a used car. Otherwise id be more than raging. I do have warranty but doubt theyll cover that haha

Hope you got a good shot of the reg on the camera OP, I really hope you get the person and take the fûcker to the cleaners.

Report it to the guards and get them to request the footage - this way it’s done correctly and nothing can come back on you - then park your car in perfect view of the camera for future!

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,069 ✭✭✭✭fryup

do you think it was done deliberately OP ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,861 ✭✭✭Mr.H

So the camera wasnt clear enough. Cant get a reg plate from it and can barely see the car involved. I dont think it was deliberately but they did leave pretty fast. It looks to be an accident and they didnt wanna stick around. Sucks but definitely gonna have to park directly under the camera in future. Even if they admitted it at the time and coudnt afford to fix it I would have understood but just leaving, leaves a bitter taste. Thanks for the advice anyway everyone.

Does anyone know somewhere local I could get the work fixed cheap but properly? I keep hearing it will cost at least 150 (from people who have not seen the damage).

Its not a brand new car so I wouldnt be worried about getting back to brand new condition. But I would like to fix it as I only bought it last week. I have the car under warranty but obviously this probably wont be covered.

Here are a pictures of the damage with a picture of the opposite side for comparison.

Bring it Joe's Crash Repair - very impressed with the work he did on one of my cars

Joe will be very expensive but good. I would give the dent repair guy in Mungret a try first. He specialises in that kind of work, whereas Joe does more extensive crash repairs.

Agree. Had a job on my previous car done in Joe's. Couldn't fault it.

Horrible to happen. And it's not a clear cut professional repair either, unless the car is only 4-5 years old. Although, if you can get it done professionally for €150 then it would be worth it.

Try Griffins Crash Repair on the Dock Rd too. Have had 3 family cars in with him. He must think I come from a family of moronic drivers at this stage.
