    Hi,

Just bought a car(private sale) and I doubt the log book will be here by then. Should I cancel or do they actually check for it?

Depends, some centres do, some don't. If you don't have it and they go looking they'll still do the test, you just won't get the cert until you bring in the logbook.

OK I can live with that. Thanks

All they ask for is your driving licence and payment.

Funny, I went for my NCT recently, the first one ever where didn't bring my logbook and sure enough they asked for it. Didn't have it so he asked for photo id, didn't have that either  had been sorting car insurance the night before and left my license in the scanner at home. They done the test anyway and just had to bring back one or the other to get the cert.

that's weird my car is over the ten years and I cannot remember the last time I was asked for the logbook. Even when I bring my wife's car all that was required was driving licence and Fee

You cannot fail a test for not having the logbook

I’ve never been asked for the logbook.

I was only asked for my logbook once and that was because of some glitch on the system only giving me 9 months instead of 2 years on questioning this they asked for logbook so they could check some details. Got 2 years cert in post after their mistake once I went home to get logbook and brought it back for them to check.

This year after about three days after reading another thread about if you needed a logbook for the NCT I got asked for the logbook at an NCT, you just never know.

The op has asked if you need the logbook for the test. The answer is no. The car will still be tested. Now if there is an issue with the chassis number and they need to verify it or an issue with the cert expiry date you might have to drop back with it but the car won’t fail because you didn’t produce it at check in.

Totally depends on who you meet at the counter. Either way as said the car won't fail for not having it with you.

How about we check the official documentation?

    https://www.ncts.ie/media/1013/preparing-for-your-nct.pdf
    8. Your Vehicle Registration Book, Registration Certificate or Licensing
Certificate is with you when you arrive at the test centre.

Just because the person at the counter didn't ask you doesn't mean you don't have to bring it with you.

As said above, even if you didn't bring it they may still test it on the day and hold on to the cert until you come back with the logbook.

Why would they hold onto the cert. If your car passes you get the cert going home. If your car doesn’t pass you get a fail sheet and I have NEVER come across a fail sheet that said log book not produced or words to that effect.

Not sure but I suppose they just need you to produce all the relevant documentation.
If you didn't bring your driver's licence they might hold they cert too.

Don't know really, I always bring what is needed so have never had to come back with any documents.
