Vw caddy 1.6 egr fault

    Afternoon lads,
    2015 caddy maxi life went into limp mode yesterday and again today, comes back with a restart but fault code points to egr. Only 100kilometres on the clock.

    Looks like a bitch to change. Has anyone ever changed one of these without a lift? Looks like a nightmare so I'm thinking of giving it to a good indy if anyone Could recommend anyone near coolock it would be appricated.

    I read vw were changing them for cost if it broke after the emissions recall but I didn't get that done unfortunately now.

    VW we're doing them for free to the customer post emissions update. To be fair i'd book it into a dealer and push for goodwill, you'll probably still get a contribution of some kind. You'd expect a part like that to last more than 36 months.

    Wouldn't fancy doing one on the driveway to be fair, there's a fair bit of work in them, 3 or so hours for someone familiar with them using a lift. They are popular to go though so most independents would be well able to do one but I'd still use a genuine part.

    thanks, I think I'll bring it to vw this morning. If the genuine part are failing after such a short time, I wouldnt be too concerned about using a genuine part. Only benifit is the 2 year warranty on the work they carry out although you can bet the new one will last just over 2 years:)
    Have you any idea of the cost difference between getting an indy to do it versus Vw if I had to pay full whack?

    The time VW (and an indy) will charge to do this is around 4.5 - 5.0 hours, so it just boils down to the different labour rates they will charge. The 2 years warranty will apply to the genuine VW part even if they don't fit it, once there is proof it was fitted by a VAT registered workshop.

    Ended up giving it to an Indy ive known for years except he was on holidays and the guy doing the job had never done one before. Told me it would be ready today at 4 and I went to collect and it was leaking oil from the turbo oil feed pipe. So he has to strip it down again. It’s costing 700 with a spurious part and now it’s off the road another day costing me another 200. Should of just gone to the Vw garage. Lesson learned.

    Should have mapped it out and blanked it off ;). €100 or so.
    As for the VW "Trust Building Measures", you would spend a huge amount of time arguing with your local Dealer to get the job done for nothing. Most were offering Free parts and charging for Labour. Some were offering a special reduced rate for the job, but none of them were fitting EGR's for nothing just because you popped in.
    TBH that's not an option anyway as you didn't have the recall done.
    Did you get a letter concerning your Van ? 2015 would have been at the end of the time-scale for this.
    If your Van was part of the Emissions Recall you are probably better off not having taken VW up on their offer.........

    Not down my way they're not. 2012 Octavia 1.6 TDi. Recall completed 9 months ago ( with previous owner). EGR went 2 months ago (3 weeks after purchase).
    Full Skoda Service history.....up until the Garage that I purchased from. Not their fault really, they just did a basic Service. Main Dealer refused to replace the EGR as part of the VW Trust Building as there wasn't a Full Skoda Service History since the Recall.
    Service Manager is an acquaintance from years ago and did his best. He told me himself that it is down to the Individual Dealer to make the call. He was of the opinion that Skoda Ireland would usually side with the Dealer (unless he was a complete ar$ehole).

    The best I could do was a free EGR and €180 Labour.
    BTW VW and Skoda Dealer.

    As the EGR's are even failing prematurely on Cars without the Recall I just decided it wasn't worth it and went for a Delete.

    As an aside since the EGR delete DPF regens have become less frequent. Another bonus.

    yes mine was part of the emissions recall but I refused it. Garage ended up charging me 650. The gasket off the oil filler pipe has to be changed once it’s removed, it’s a compression gasket. If it goes again I’ll definitely go for the delete and won’t feel guilty about it for polluting the air. Is your car Smokey or anything after the remap and delete?

    No smoke whatsoever.. Blanking off the EGR will not cause any extra smoke, if anything it would give less smoke as the original Exhaust Gases are not passed through the intake again.
    The DPF is what stops soot (and consequently smoke).
    Having said that we have a 2007 BMW 535 with a total DPF Removal and mapped to 350bhp (from 270). Even though it's on the older emissions test for the NCT the last NCT test gave a smoke reading of .31....pass value is anything below 2.5.
    Even the latest Euro 6 regulations have a Pass Value of .7 (from 2015/2016 depending on Manufacturer), so it would even pass the newest Regulations.

    My older van, a vw caravelle with the 1.9 PD engine got very smoky in later life. If you revved while parked it left a black spot on the ground but it never had trouble with the nct test so I wouldnt use that as a gauge.
    I no the egr isn't to do with the smoke but I was thinging about the mapping job, maybe messing with the fuel air ratio but I guess its literally just mapping out the egr.

    AFAIK nearly all the EGR Delete Maps don't interfere with Fuel/Air.
    All they do is simply tell the ECU to ignore the EGR.....it doesn't take readings from it and it doesn't tell it to open/close etc.
    Your Caravelle wouldn't have had a DPF, that's why it smoked.


    BTW, try and find someone near you with VagCom. They will be able to check the Ash Level in the DPF. This can be handy as you will know when it's nearing it's ash capacity limit.
