Pressure tactics today

    Evening all,

Just back from some car hunting - specifically after a Micra, approx 2k.

Met a car dealer in a car park (I know.. I know), wanted to make sure I'm not overthinking it but there were a few red flags:

    1) Meeting in a carpark despite having nearby storage (and other cars for sale according to website)

    2) Full Service History - turns out, there was only stamps for the last three years, still insisted it was serviced at the main dealer for F/S/H.

    3) Previous owner - was a convent... may be true due to it being a Micra but still.

    4) Incoming car shortage - from around now until the end of the year, used car sales will dip so now is the best time to buy, any truth to this one?

    5) Interested buyers - he had buyers begging him to keep it until tomorrow morning...

Are these all pretty common tactics? Anything else I should be aware of or am I over-thinking it.

Plenty better cars out there then a Micra.

Go for a Yaris or similar.

Whats wrong with buying from a dealer for a lower priced car?

Run a mile? From what? It's a 2k Micra and there's really nothing there that alarms me tbh. You don't have to buckle under the sellers pressure. Judge a car on its owm merits? If the car looks in good nick work away and buy it, if the car is a banger walk away. You're buying the car, not marrying the seller.

If none of the above alarms you then fair enough, I was chucking it out there for others who may not be too familiar with buying cars (I've not bought many myself - this is not for me).

One other thing out of curiosity - engine was idling between 800-1100, is that normal for an older car or should it be fairly stable?

Because you're probably paying 2k for a car actually worth a good bit less. You paying for the dealer's profit margin while getting very little in the way or warranty or comeback in return on a car of that value. There is little or no value in buying from a dealer in that price range, plus cars being sold by dealers in this price range tend to be exactly like the type that the OP encountered.

No it should be stable. An irratic idle on a micra of that vintage probably means the timing chain has stretched.

There's Micras everywhere. The seller sounds like he was trying to put pressure on you and for that alone he doesn't deserve your money. Just look elsewhere, and yes the idle rpm should not be jumping between 800 and 1100.
