Golf - auto hold

Just have a query on the auto hold feature in my Golf Mk 7.

If I do a hill start with my hand break on (I pulled up the switch myself) the handbreak releases perfectly.

However, if auto hold puts on the hand break and I try to do a hill start, the handbreak gets released too early and I roll backwards.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a fix or a setting which can be changed for auto hold to release later?

Probably depends on how steep the hill is. Mine used to roll back a bit on a gentle slope as the hill start won’t engage.

Don't know about any other marque, but on my Prius if I stop on a hill and hold the car with the footbrake, when I am ready to move off I press the footbrake harder slightly and that holds the car until I engage the accelerator.
Perhaps the extra push on your footbrake might do the trick?

The thing is, if I engage the handbrake with the button it always works. Very weird.

The auto hold is engaging but it is releasing too early before the clutch bites.

I dont think auto hold uses the handbrake. It uses the normal brakes. Red light come on when handbrake is engaged. Green light for auto hold.

That’s the reason. Do you know if you can tune the auto hold to release later?

You can't adjust it yourself. The two usual causes of this are either driver error (you releasing the clutch too slow after coming to the biting point), or the clutch being worn of some combination of the two.

That said, the release point is self learning and can be adjusted via computer and there is also a software update that refines the intuition of the system available through dealers but tbh I dont think that'll do anything for you. I would suspect either driver error or nearly worn clutch as the system in those Golfs is fairly spot on tbh.

Weirdly, this was the solution. If I pump the brake before setting off the auto hold releases at the correct time.

I don't think you will need to pump the brake just get it pressed good and solid if you stop on a hill and will be relying on hill hold to take off.
There should be no need to go and press the brake again before taking off. I did note myself on passats that if you come to a stop with just enough brake force hold the car that it will release a little too soon.

That is exactly it. If you read the description of the AutoHold function, it is all very well explained. The UK site has all the tech explained, here's the AutoHold page.

I've been messing around the the hill / auto hold on various VAG cars and I think I've figured out the conditions that it operates under.
    * It holds the car for 1.5 seconds after the brake pedal is released, then it releases.
    * Pressing the accelerator while the hill hold is on switches it off instantly
    * Coming to a stop with gentle braking sometimes means the ssytem does not come on (probably not enough brake pressure applied)

OP, I'd try to not use the accelerator to get the car moving. Most cars will hold on the clutch with no accelerator. It sound like you are pressing the accelerator when doing a hill start and that switches off the hill hold.
