hi can anyone tell me the difference between jobseekers allowance payment and what you would get from illness benefit/sick cert from your doctor. jobseekers is €198 and im not sure what the difference is if the doctors certs are applied.

Maximum JSA/Benefit is €198 and so is Illness Benefit.
You need a certain amount of PRSI paid by yourself and credited to your PRSI “account” by either your employer or SW to qualify for either “benefit”.
Then the amount of benefit you get will be based on your weekly earnings in 2016.
For JSA there is a means test, nothing to do with PRSI.

Also to qualify for job seekers you must be actively engaged in looking for a job with illness benefit you are certified to be medically unfit to work or seek work.

thanks for explaining this. i have been on jobseekers a few years from being out of work but trying my best all the time to get something before i got struck down with illness, and now the tus programme sent me a letter about a scheme. due to being ill and in the process of going to my doctor about illness benefit i want to refuse this but jobseekers will be affected. i have very good cause to refuse and do you know if they reduce jobseekers or cut you off completely if you refuse tus scheme.

If you are not fit for work you must go to your GP and if he agrees that you are unfit for work then he will complete part of your Illness Benefit cert. you complete the rest and submit it to your local SW office .
As it is unlikely that you will satisfy the PRSI requirement for Illness Benefit then you will have to apply for SWA from the CWO as your JSA will stop. The SWA is more strictly means tested then JSA.

It depends on how long have you been ill and how long are you likely to remain ill. If you are likely to remain unfit for the next year, you would be better off applying for Disability Allowance rather than SWA and you can stay on your Jobseekers - the means test for SWA is harsher than for JA or DA.

If you are on illness benefit you are also allowed to leave the state for all or any of the time you are receiving g the payment

But you still have to ask for permission to leave before you go.

    Hi,

Ive been illness benefit for 18 months and two weeks ago i resigned my job.

I received a payment from them for holiday and bank holiday pay owed from 2020 to 2021.

I received a letter today from the illness benefit dept saying that the inland revenue have notified them that i received said payment and why!

Will they stop my payments now because I have received this money?

    Thanks for any advise!!

It is very urgent you contact illness benefit section explaining the payment as owed holidays and time, unfortunately people don't realise cross referencing is done between revenue and the DEASP, whilst not the same, many people on the PUP got caught out by ligitimate payments from employers such as holiday pay when their employers were doing end of year accounts and had their PUP suspended.

At a minimum your illness payment may be suspended for the period you recieved income (whatever it was).

Some employees also earn sick pay along with illness benifit which is permitted but as that would be an ongoing arrangement reported as such on employers payroll submission to revenue it would not raise a flag with DEASP, in your case a sudden payment was made and reported through your employers payroll reporting to revenue, not done maliciously, they wouldn't know the consequences to your illness benefit payment.

The question of you resigning (whilst I understand the possible reasons, illness related etc) may also need explaining and perhaps you need to think about what to say. Perhaps avoid mentioning that if possible 🤔

The payment explainable, resigning may need explanation but as long as your GP continues to submit certs you should be fine. I don't know if you were issued a final payslip, but you may need to submit this.

Also you mention 18 months on illness benefit, that must be running out soon and you really need to look at applying for Disibility allowance urgently if your illness is going to be long term, it's a very long process and the sooner you apply, the better.

Is maith an scáthán súil charad.
