Getting true valuation of a car for VRT refund

I'm currently considering purchasing a car from the UK, but the VRT seems to be very high for the particular model I'm interested in. I've heard of people getting a portion of their VRT refunded after contacting them with some good arguments as to why the OMSP Revenue have stated is inaccurate.

The problem I have is that I can't find much, if any, evidence in writing to make this claim. The car I'm purchasing is not common at all in Ireland and so I can't find similar models on Carzone. I know dealers won't provide a written valuation as this would be of no benefit to them.

The only written valuation I have is from Motorcheck which gives an OMSP about 25% lower than Revenue. Is this sufficient to make an argument or is there any other way to obtain an accurate valuation of a car?

    What’s the exact car/spec?

Audi A5 1.8 TFSI Black Edition 2012. Not very common in Ireland, all I can find on Carzone are TDI models.

Have you done a valuation on an S Line with the same emissions? How does that compare with the motorcheck figure? Does the emissions on the motorcheck valuation match the emissions of the actual car?

Yes, checking with an S-Line model with the same emissions and the exact same input gives a VRT €1250 cheaper. Quite substantial.

How much do revenue reckon these cars are worth?

What’s the actual difference between the two models?

Larger wheels, sports suspension, sportier body kit, better sound system, but otherwise pretty much all else the same.

Much of a difference in the original OMSP?

About €9k, which is surprising. Was the black edition that much more expensive originally? I'm finding it hard to find old sale prices when new.

I've just been looking on Carzone and whilst I can't find a petrol model of my car, there are a number of diesel versions with the exact same spec besides engine. The OMSP on Revenue is €22000, compared with €24000 with the petrol model I'm looking at.

In reality, these cars are actually selling for about €17000 to €18000. Diesel models are typically more expensive than petrol models. Do I have an argument if I present this information or just disregard it as I'm comparing petrol with a diesel, even though my logic is sound?

Also, if hypothetically someone was importing the same diesel model, could they have their VRT brought down based on the valuation evidence of €18000 when compared to €22000 they claim?

I'm just wondering if I'm wasting my time looking into this at all!
