Extra insurance work done without asking

So the wife had a small accident in her car. She drove over a small wall and damaged the front splitter and managed to take out a pipe to the radiator as well.
Car was taken to a garage and we were told we'd get a call about the damage.
Went on holidays and heard nothing. She rang them and they had done nothing (no work or never contacted us)....the lad in the garage actually said "sure what's the big rush!!".
She authorised them to go ahead with a new radiator, pipes and the small bit of bodywork repair.
This morning we get a call to say the car will be ready on Wednesday for collection.
They also took it upon themselves to refurb the 2 front alloys and put on 2 new front tyres. Thing is that I put 4 new tyres on the car 5 months ago.
Wife is adamant that neither of the front rims were damaged and the tyres were absolutely perfect when the car was taken away.
Are they taking the pìss or when an insurance jib comes in you milk as much as you can?

Who was actually authorising repairs here, you or the insurance company? Also, how well do you reckon your wife inspected the car after the accident while it was being towed away, did she get a good look at the time for buckles, check the inner tyre walls for bulges, check the wheel barrels for cracks etc?

Its often the case if a car is in for an insurance repair that if further work is needed, the workshop will contact the insurance company engineer/ claims adjuster and if he seems the work necessary and reasonable it will be done.

It's not necessarily "milking it", it's moreso avoiding a thread on here in 6 months time when you are getting new tyres, ranting that the first workshop didn't cop that you had two cracked rims after the missus drove over a wall. All insurance estimates are based on a visual inspection of the car as it sits and are subject to further investigation and stripping down, generally speaking.

Fair points. I'd be interested to see the tyres at least as I reckon there was nothing amiss with them.
