i'm living in an rural area, near a main road, not too many trees about...sparrowhawks like wooded areas i thought?

    * whenever i hear the noise and look up i see nothing out of the ordinary, could it be a nesting bird?

I'd still say Sparrowhawk, heard one myself yesterday. They'll still be begging for food from the parents for another month or so. A young male will have a higher pitch than a female. Kestrels would be more a bird of the air as opposed to the bush, or trees. I don't think there are many buzzards over your way yet, are you in the northern or southern end?.....

Sounds a bit like a wheelbarrow in dire need of some WD40. :D

Well that would be good country for a Spar.
There's Buzzards 'round Portumna so that's only a short distance away as the 'Crow' flies.....
