Air conditioning fault on 2008 Mazda 6

As described, the air conditioning is currently not working on my Mazda 6. Apparently the compressor needs to be replaced. The cost of doing so with original Mazda parts is really high. Any ideas how I can go about doing this more cheaply.

    Based in Limerick.

One other thing, can anyone recommend a good independent mechanic in the Limerick area?

You could try www.mister-auto.ie and see if there's a cheaper non-OEM option. It may be possible to get a local mechanic to fit it, but the system would have to be degassed first.

Did you get the hi & low pressures checked first?

No I haven't done a whole pile with it other than a mechanic saying it was the compressor and it was costly to repair.

Does your mechanic have an automatic ac filling machine?

I don't have a mechanic as such, that was just a quick look a friend of mine took. It's making a noise when I activate the A/C, which sounds like a broken bearing or the like. But I will get a proper opinion when I get the car serviced.

If the noise is from the compressor, then yes, it probably needs replacing.

Does the ac still work? If so, you will need to get the refrigerant gas removed first

No there is no cold air coming from the vents when the a/c is on.

Any idea how much a compressor might be?

Thanks for the help, appreciate it.

Price the part there yourself O.P. Won't be cheap unfortunately.

I'll give it a go sure. Was hoping I could locate one from a breakers yard or something...but haven't been down that route before so not sure of the process. Perhaps a mechanic might be able to sort one.

It's been a real pain not having a/c during the hottest spell of weather I can remember!!!

    Might this be the part?

Anyway I will let someone more qualified than me deal with the problem but I think to get the part from Mazda would cost €1500 plus...

These are another crowd I found in the UK when looking for a compressor for a 2001 Passat. Never used them so can't vouch for quality, but their parts are well priced.

Could be. Better to call a Mazda dealer and get the exact part number for your car so you know what you're looking for.

I'm not sure about buying a used compressor. You're not 100% sure if it even works or how long it will last. You'll still be paying a fair whack to get it installed so better to buy new and hopefully get a few years out of it.

Also worth noting that car aircon systems need to be regassed every two years or so. That means using a pro that has the correct equipment to do the job. The gas also contains the oil that lubricates the compressor. Even though the aircon may still work, it may not be lubricating the compressor sufficiently and you end up with an expensive failure.
