Upgrading from HTC Desire 530 - what phone to choose?

I have a HTC Desire 530, paid 150 for it a few years ago, not in a contract.

It's ok, but I've noticed a red exclamation symbol inside the battery symbol recently, and it seems slower than friend's phones.

My budget for a new handset is 300 max.

I have a SIM-only plan with Eircom, 24pm for unlimited calls plus SMS, and 5GB of data.

Vodafone rang me, and offered 20pm SIM-only plan, unlimited calls/SMS, and 15 GB of data.

I ordered the Vodafone SIM today.

I don't know much about handsets, and am grateful for any advice.

    I have seen:

    Samsung Galaxy J-class and A-class
Huawei P20 Lite - mentioned by Vodafone shop staff - 300 euro

The Galaxy J5 2017 is 200 with Vodafone (140 if you switch, will I qualify?)

Galaxy A6 for 280? This is better than the J5?

300 is a good budget for a decent phone these days. Search for Xiaomi models online. You can get a top of the range one for around that price. Stay clear of the P20 lite or any other J-Series. You can get much better value phones for your money.

However in saying that, you've lasted this long with a 530 so maybe a top of the range isn't priority for you and the P20L/J Series would suffice... Keep your options open and don't go for the first one in a high street shop. Good luck.

P20L isnt terrible, wouldnt go near Galaxy A/J, far better off getting an older S than a new A that runs like a turd.

    Thanks.

I didn't expect the switch from Eir to Vodafone to happen so quickly, it seems out of my control.

The new Vodafone SIM arrived Thur morning.

I got an SMS from Vodafone yesterday, Friday, at 11:35am, telling me that:

"you will only be able to receive calls and SMS for a short period. Please check your voicemail now"

I admit that I didn't check the voicemail straight away. What did I miss?

Later, the handset switched itself off.

The new SIM won't work in the Eir handset as it's locked to Eir.

I rang Eir today, unlock code will be e-mailed to me within 10 days.

So to get any service, I'll have to buy a new handset today, in a retail shop.
