Can you give me some info on setting rape or kale from what I’m seeing online I think it might be too late to set kale but is it still ok to set rape?

As a rule it's too late to sow kale even tho I'm sowing it for a fella Thursday. Rape can be sown up to the 21st of this month

Thank you. Can you tell me the process of going from having grass in the field to having rape or kale

Many different ways. Graze or cut grass down tight and spray off.

Then either direct drill into the ground, plough and till then sow or if ya can powerharrow and sow after that. Whichever ya prefer

Spray field with gysophate(roundup) 2L/acre. After 48-72 hours mob graze the field with as many cattle as possible. After they have cleaned get the field disced by an independent disc harrow or some other means of tilling it. Apply fertlizer 3.5-4 bags of 18-6-12. spread rape seed ( I used a fertlizer spreader) ideally split in two and spread accross and along field. Roll field.

You will need to keep crows away from field after setting and pigeons when it begins to establish. You may also need to spread some slug pellets and maybe a bit of granline0.5-2 bags/acre depending on ph.

I had some rape and turnip seed left over from 2 years ago, so I took a chance on putting it on some barley stubble ground...

Ground was given a quick harrow straight after straw was taken off and seed was broadcast with the spinner...

It wasn’t rolled as it started to rain heavy as I was finishing. It got a full day of rain that day plus rain over the few days so it never got rolled in the finish...

But - it’s in 2 weeks now, I can see it starting to come, but It’s very sparse, and there is a lot of barley coming now as well...

Will it do, or will the barley stifle it over time? (Hopefully there should be a pic attached)

Also - what fertiliser would lads put on it. It only got 1 bag 18-6-12 / acre when it was sown... I was going to go with another bag of 18-6-12 now, and see how it gets on...

Rape is sparce when it's spread. The spinner might not have helped either tho

Dose not look too scarce. it will take time. As for the barley it is a case of you are where you are. Would not raelly worry hope barley will not got to seed so if grazing it will be ok. If barley goes to seed cattle will not eat barley because of spike on grain. If you are baling it it is immaterial.

If there is a lot of volunteer Barley in it it would be best to spray it out. It will end up smoothering the rape and it will die off then and just be a big mess.
I don't know the spray but it's the sane stuff as is sprayed on beet. A good agromist will know

Doubt if barley will smother the rape. After it germinate's rape is very aggressive especially if it is competing with itself or other plants. Doubt if barley will stay ahead of it when it gets going. Big issue IMO is if it is spring barley is that it will develop seed heads on small plant. However it is not s big issue.

    Thanks all...

I’ll chance it as is, without spraying it. I did this for some cheap fodder, I had the seed and the fertiliser it got won’t break me - to add spray and getting someone to spray now would add a bit more than i’d like to spend to be honest...

It got some more 18-6-12 there now, and it looked better I thought - the photo above is a few days old and it has come on a good bit since...

We’ll see how we do, i’ll let ye know how it goes... thanks again for replies...

I give it another 50-70kgs of 18-6-12/acre and 20-30 units of N/acre. That is a half bag of urea/acre. Buying a bag of urea for every 2 acres will only cost 9 euro/acre. You have to feed the crop to get the true value out of it

Heard of a lad who sowed redstart in may and undersowed it with barley. Got 20 bales per acre in one cut. Fair yield after 10 weeks

The issue is it will grow up over the seedlings and die as soon as it gets cold and then smother it. It happened a farmer in my DG who sows fodder rape after his barley to keep heifers out. Killed off the whole thing

Have redstart sown here since 20th aug. It was slow starting of with the dry weather. It's only up an inch or two now. It got fertilizer and granlime at sowing and topdressed again 3 weeks later. Is it to late for it now or will it stay growing away.

Any fear that forward crops of redstart could seed before winter? Gobsmacked at the progress of ours, and no experience..

That's a good complaint:D could you 0 graze it now then graze it later? Any pics?

I put a few stripes of barley through mine a few years back to try it, cattle didn't really go for the barley, but birds liked it. If it was cut and wrapped, ya I could see it working alright as GrasstoMilk says.

Probaly ok but this year crops are steaming on.that idea of cutting and let it go again worth considering8

I see a crop of rape (I assume it’s rape) on my way to work every day - it’s in probably 6 weeks... it’s 6 inches high, maybe a bit higher - but it’s starting to flower...
    That’s not right is it?
Can you feed it after flowering, or does it matter?

Was very tempted to have a go and pit it with the grass, but lined up at this stage to needing it outside for Nov/Dec and coulnt risk it not regrowing...has anyone here ever cut and got a subsequent grazing?

That’s Redstart at 4 weeks. Was top dressed a week ago.

It has been done around here but it's much earlier in the year

Land was to dry for it. Some neighbours around me have the same trouble. If it would continue growing into November it might have a chance. How long does it stay growing for?

I sowed in ley ground that I will be reseeding next year. Meadow was sprayed off in June before cutting. I had intended ploughing but with the drought and ground being too hard, had to wait and ended up just discing it and get sowed before too late in middle August.

3 and a half bags of 18.6.12 at setting plus 40 units of CAN plus S after 3 weeks

I haven't done it, but we had a lad at a DG meeting in the summer who works for germinal seeds(? I think it was) who said it could be cut then grazed after, but I think he was talking about grazing in feb/march at turnout with weanlings.

Flowering now could be because of drought stress, what part of the country is it Dinzee?

Cork - I wouldn't have said it would be drought, but its hard to know. We have had plenty rain 10 miles away, but the way the rain feel, the rain might have missed them when twas needed...
Would flowering now make any different to it feed wise? (other than there being less to feed)
    Probably mustard or charlock

Maybe - I would have said twas rape, with the leaves and the kinda flowers it has.
It was a grass field. I have heard of people putting in mustard as a green fertiliser on stubble ground, but not sure why you would do that in a grass field? I don't know what charlock is...
But, I dont know what mustard or charlock look like, so I cant say. It could be either of them...

Mustard and charlock would both be fairly closely related to rape but would be more likely to start flowering earlier. The seed can sit in the ground and remain viable for an awful long time

My crop of rape/turnip is not coming on as well as i’d like...

It’s in now since 31 Aug, so over 3 weeks, but the field is still very red to look at, no green cover after coming yet really...

The plants are very small - how long will it keep growing for? Conscious that we are almost into October now so growth will be reducing every day...

Million dollar question for a lot of us! 3 bags of 18 6 12 gone on ours and yours still looks better than the last bit we sowed.

A fist full of mustard can turn in to eight tonne of grain over two years.

I've seen it come up ten years later. That said I've seen kale come up in a field that was ploughed in the 90s, but set with kale in the 40s

I asked the same question a week or more ago myself. I got no answer but I reckon if it stays fairly mild for the next month or so it will grow away. Alot of redstart, rape etc.. sown around me and it's still at the same stage as yours.

It is patchy, ran through it with a direct drill with more seed after the stubbles was cleared of straw. Will stick a photo up at the weekend.

If I was doing it again I'd go with double the seed rate with the vicon. Might be an idea in future to do it with a BIG drone:D
