    Hi,

Wondering people's opinions on a 14 -15 Corolla petrol saloon and what are they like? Are they underpowered for a car of their size and how do they compare power wise to the 1.4d4?

Have driven an Auris d4d and was happy with them power wise but then they are probably a bit lighter. Petrol suits my needs and prefer the saloon look to the hatchback.

They are a bit gutless compared to the diesel, which isn’t a fireball by any means. It’s ok for what it is, and it’s all relative.

My dad has that engine in a Mk1 Auris and it's ok performance wise. Hasn't even a day's trouble in the years he has owned it. The Auris got a 1.2 turbo petrol engine too circa 2015 if you want a bit more power and the practicality of a hatchback.

My wife has a 10 Auris with the same engine and its fairly gutless but perfect for every day pottering about. I wouldn't want the same engine in the much bigger body saloon as it would feel even more underpowered than in the hatch.

I had the 1.4 D Corolla for a day a few years and gutless is exactly how I'd describe that! Can't imagine what the petrol is like if that's even slower!

The current Corolla is actually a little bit lighter than the old (2007) model Auris and roughly the same weight (10kg) as the current (not the brand new just launched) Auris

I think they go well for the size of the engine definitely cruise well with the sixth gear and economical enough engines like these are getting rare now

Yep, the Hyundai/Kia 1.4 was the nearest thing to them, but they’ve replaced it with a turbo engine too. Toyota have the 1.2T but seemed to pitch as a more expensive alternative to the 1.33 on the Auris.

Also was considering a slightly older 1.8 Valvematic Avensis from the UK. Obviously a bigger car with much more power. My concern with them is that their rare parts would be hard to come by and what are they like on petrol. Then if the Corolla is underpowered I guess it's not going to that much more economical if it tends to get reffed harder. I'm wary of turbo petrol engines. The simpler the engine with less potential for maintenance issues the better.

To be honest, there is nothing complex about the 1.8 dual VVTi engine in the Avensis, it's basically the same design as the 1.33 dual VVTi engine tried and tested in the Auris and Corolla.

Valvematic is different to normal Dual VVT-I though. Can’t remember what the actual difference was, but it’s more advanced. Would agree that it’s nothing to be afraid of, but used parts for the 1.6 would be easier to find in Ireland.

I wonder what are the Valvematic like in comparison to say a Corolla VVTI on petrol. I suppose driven hard on the motorway both would drink petrol but would they be similar tipping around town.
I suppose if the Valvematic isn't an overly complex engine there might not be that many used parts you would be looking for specific to that car. Gearbox maybe if it ever went.

They seem similar on paper to me.

It’s all about torque though. At peak level, the diesel has 50% more torque than the petrol, this figure is achieved lower in the Rev range too compared to petrol.
The diesel will be slower for really low speeds getting off the line but quicker once it gets rolling. Plus you don’t have to use the revs as much in the diesel so it will seem like you don’t have to drive the stones out it the do overtakes etc.

How would the Honda Jazz petrol engines compare to the 1.3 corolla and the KIA 1.4?

I'm looking to buy one of these cars and want to know which one has the better pep for overtaking.

The Jazz would be a bit quicker, but only cpbecause it’s lighter, the same engine in the Civic would be slower than a Corolla. You can get the 1.33 in the Yaris too, actually makes a lovely car of them.

Anyone any thoughts on fuel usage between the smaller petrol engines eg Corolla Vs larger car and engine 1.8 Avensis? Cheers.
