Anyone worked in Dubai?

Myself and the mrs are looking into moving. I already have family there and some friends, been going most years for a good while. I love it but there are downsides like the heat and the cost. Would like to hear from any other Irish people who have lived there. Since there is no tax, for the same % of my wages I'm paying in rent now I can live in a great area like by the Marina. Eating and drinking out is crazy expensive however. But wondering about everything else... Also wondering about heat as Ive only ever been in winter. Is the summer brutal?

I have not properly started looking for jobs yet but I work in sales/marketing for big tech companies so there should be jobs out there. Question is will you have a better quality of life and better chance of saving money for a house as little chance here. I was told its a very competitive job market and not so much of a need to bring so many in from across the globe as there was years ago.

Interested to hear what people think of living in Dubai and any tips or advice.

I know someone involved in recruitment out there. Maybe you should make contact? I'll forward his email address if you'd like?

Isn’t there 5% tax now? I work there maybe three/four weeks a year and the last time I was over my colleagues were complaining about it.

Still I’d rather 5% than what we have here any day.

The 5% is VAT I believe - it was only added recently. Ours is 23% for comparison. Still it was a big deal for them. Things are definitely very expensive there but its offset by comparative salaries.

Are you considering long term, or maybe a year or two to build up a large deposit. The later is doable with an end date in mind, but the former could be tough going.

The latter. Just looking for a change and something new and exciting, with a real ability to save some decent money. No plans to live there forever, although saying that I have family and friends who moved for a year or two and are still there 10+ years later.

Re the heat, in the summer you simply spend all your time indoors. The only time you are outside is running to the car. I was there last year and it was 40 degrees. It's hot but manageable. It's when it gets to 50 that it becomes a problem.... The main thing is I'd prefer it to be too hot for a few months during the summer, and 20-35 the rest of the time - to the miserable weather we have here the vast majority of the year.

Any doctors reading this thread who have gone to work in Dubai? Is it worth going over there for a few years post CCST to earn money?
