Medical card at time of referral, but none now, am I still covered?

Hey, I’ve had a look online and can’t seem to find anything or anyone talking about the situation I’ve found myself in.

I was referred by my dentist to a public dental clinic to have my wisdom teeth removed, this referral was made roughly 3 years ago, and I had a medical card at the time of referral.

I got a letter in the post with a date for surgery and it states that I should bring my medical card or health insurance with me on the day, but, I no longer have a medical card as it’s been 3 years since the initial referral and my health insurance won’t cover the procedure as it’s a prexisting complaint.

I’m just wondering if I’ll get stung with hospital fees over not having a medical card anymore?

My own dentist advised that I won’t have to pay because I had a medical card at the time of referral and that it’s not my problem that I waited this long but I’m not really sure what to think.

Has anyone experienced something similar or know what the deal is? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

    Update...
I phoned the hospital and they say I’ll be charged a small fee, this fee however can not be disclosed, not even an estimate. I will know the fee when I receive it in the post after the procedure.

What a load of BS. A "small fee" to one person could be unaffordable to another!!

OP, could you please update us on this small fee after your treatment? Good luck with your treatment.
