Help me spend 10K on a car!

Another buying advice thread but the last one worked well for me so I'll ask for some help from you guys again.

Looking at replacing my 2008 petrol Mazda 6. As suggested my budget is around 10k so looking for something along the lines of a A4, Accord, 3 series, Mazda 6, IS or Passat.

Not too fussed on fuel, so either petrol or diesel, probably a preference for petrol but choice is limited. Essentially looking for something reliable, with decent performance and lots of comfort.

Have a soft spot for the IS 200D but have heard some poor things about that engine.

Again, any advice and guidance is greatly appreciated.

The mileage you cover indicates which fuel you should go for. I know petrol models are slim on the ground. Small regular mileage on a diesel is a killer.

I think I'm doing enough mileage to keep a diesel running properly, 25k km's per year?

But prefer to drive a petrol car and don't mind paying a little more to do so. Should be a saving in price when I buy anyway.

Great! Now just to try and find a decent one.

I took a quick look on DD . Can't link the ad . First car was an Audi A4 . 10 reg 120k on the clock. 1.8 petrol 570 tax just south of 7k.

Seen a couple of those all right... Whats that particular engine like in terms of reliability?

Heard nothing bad against them. Good solid comfortable car. The older 2.0 diesel got most of the bad reviews.

There are a number of A5's with this engine... mostly 2008/2009, but not overly concerned about the year if the car is solid, comfortable and good to drive.

Obviously there are a number of 3 series in this category but I'm not sure about they're reliability.

Depends on the year. The older Bms used the 1.8 petrol engine in the 316, thirsty. From 07 on they used the 1.6 . Not too familiar with reliability for from. More wiser heads would know.

It really is difficult to find good choice when looking for a petrol.

If the tfsi engine is decent, then I guess that opens up cars such as golf GTi, seat Leon, sirocco also...

Do you think I would have any issues running a diesel with my mileage? Most of it is motorway too.

Is the 2.2 diesel engine in the Lexus that bad?

Short distances are a killer but if you motorway driving is a plus.
The 2.2 don't have a great rep, although age is a factor too.

If you are used to Mazda reliability, a high spec Accord 2.2 diesel could be the right direction for you better comfort and similar reliability. It may require another 2-3k though. If you want modern and don't need so much interior space, 2013+ mazda 3 is a decent car. Again you need to top up the budget a little bit I guess.

One of the things that most concerns me is reliability, I really don't like having to spend money on repairs after purchasing! But who does.

Looking through my list of options in terms of diesel, most seem to have their problems. What are the most dependable diesel engines on the market?

What about a Prius 1.8 petrol? One of most reliable cars around

It's a good shout... Not sure I would utilise the electric too much though. Also, concerned about my street cred...

Performance wise I'm gonna guess it's not too hectic, plus I'm not sure I can live with a CVT transmission. Been in a few taxis of late so I know they are pretty comfortable. Still have my heart set on a sporty saloon.

The lack of decent diesel engines available seems a stumbling block however. Not a lot going on petrol wise.

When you sporty, do you mean driving characteristics or look or both as must have ?

    For the links above

If I remember correctly, 2.0 lt in those are not most sporty thing to drive nad it has its own issues. Honestly, any BMW out of warranty wouldn't make you happy if you are used to japanese reliability

Not very knowledgeable about Audis but that example seem to be a low spec version. Engine is probably 160 BHP tfsi. I didn't read anything negative about engines but they weren't very common engine in the market between diesel alternatives. Again 8 years old german premium can be risky reliability wise regardless.

Scirocco is based on golf but has much better driving characteristics due to low center of gravity and tyres at 4 corners. Probably the most fun to drive in those choices.

I guess driving characteristics more so than looks.

The more I look the less viable options there appear to be.

Really liked the IS 200 but if that diesel is a troublesome as it appears, it would be too much of a risk.

Disappointed the 2.2 diesel Mazda has similar issues as it too was a favourite of mine.

Any other suggestions that might be a good alternative to those above?

I'm in a similar position, I decided to go for an Accord Tourer again, this time an 8th Gen version instead of my old 7th Gen. They do have DPF issues but at this stage its not insurmountable with exchange recon units being available for €280, I value reliabilty over most other things but wanted a little more punch so went for the Type S 180 over the standard 150bhp EX.
They have a pretty nice spec to be fair.
But lack of decent examples over here has forced me to look to the UK where even there they aren't that common.

A bit of a tangent here but what are people's thoughts on the Honda Civic in either 1.6 diesel or 2.2?

Are these diesels a better bet than the Lexus/Mazda units?

I would say definitely more reliable the later idtec engines are much more refined than the ictdi but even those didn’t give much bother if cared for, mine had 165k mi on it when it was written off and it was still running very nicely, I did 6k oil changes on it from 120k onwards. The 1.6 idtec is supposed to be a very nice unit as well as more economic while not losing out too much on power
    or torque

I have a 151 1.6idtec. Sport model. Really nice car and extremely reliable. Have it close on a year and a half. Will admit that the split rear window is not everyone's cup of tea but I don't mind it and I did 29kkms the first 12 months I have had it. Definitely recommend. Slightly out of OPs budget, but definitely worth a look if you can get it when the engine changes happened in 2013!

Thanks Tindog, I can probably push the budget a little further if I felt I was making a good investment.

Not the best color combo but just an example :
