IT specialist to draft CV

    Hi guys,

Just wondering if anyone could give me a steer in the right direction.

Trying to help a neighbour find a new job. He’s studied part time for the past four years in IT security. He also worked full time in retail. Since last summer, he’s only secured 2 IT related interviews, and unfortunately didn’t land either role.

I’ve reviewed his CV. Even I can see it’s crap, there’s four sentences in relation to his degree and the rest is retail related, it should be the other way around. A better CV should increase his chances of an interview, and he can go from there.

I’d like to tell him who/where to go to get it re-done properly, I’m guessing if he makes an appointment with a specialist IT recruiter, they might type it up for him, but I’m not sure.

    Anyone have any advice?

    Cheers

He needs to get IT experience.

Even something simple like offering to do penetration testing for free for various Irish websites and companies.

Is he considering doing the OSCP cert?

I’ve no idea what that is but I’ll mention it. Any pointers as to someone he could consult with/hire to spruce up his CV in the meantime?

Well, making a CV is easy. The problem is you need jobs which can sell you.

    Name
    Phone | E-mail
    Work experience in descending order
    - for each job describe your achievements, e.g. launched v1 of software before the deadline, was #1 sales person in 2017, etc.
    Education in descending order

Use a template which is simple.

The place where he studied might be able to help with the CV. I’m currently studying at NUI Galway and they offer free CV clinics for students. They actually do them at postgrad open days too so if you’ve any large universities near you keep a look out for that type of event. In the meantime online templates are useful, and tailor each CV to job being applied for, rather than having one for all.
