Bored of office life and want a physical job. Any ideas?

I've spent the last 6 years in a marketing role, sitting at the same desk.

I'm very good at what I do and the pay is decent, but I'm getting itchy feet and often envy people with a more physical job. For example, technicians hanging off ESB poles or welders working on an oil rig.

I'm in my very early 30s and not sure where to start looking or even what's out there for somebody my age.

Does anybody have any advice? Websites to check? Careers to look at?

    Thanks

I was the same a few years ago, I too wanted a physical job. I ended up leaving a science job to join an army for a few years... It knocked it right out of me, now I'm back in a laboratory. My advice, just take up some fun hobbies - the grass is always greener, my friend.

    Hi

I would agree, the grass is always greener! I would say stay in your nice job especially as you are good at it. Perhaps see if there is any other area you could get involved in at work or a project that you could help out with.

Like the previous poster said, look at taking up interesting active hobbies outside of work.

    I absolutely agree with AlphabetCards.

Start with it as a hobby.

Then see if you can make some money from it on the side.

Only then should you ditch the stable day job.

On the other hand, we only have one life, so you should live it they way you want to live it. So if you have some savings, no loans, no children, no responsibilities, etc., you could start over doing something else.

In my teens and early twenties I worked on a coal lorry, I would have killed to get an office job. Wait until mid winter JackieChang, Then go hang around outside in the cold, wet, rain etc. It will make you love your office.

Not everybody feels this way, although I know it is the agreed group think. A guy I worked with used to wear a t-shirt that totally sumed up my opinion on it all :
"Better a rainy day on the mountain, than a sunny day in the office"
But yeh, I'm still in the office :(
It ain't the weather that keeps me there

What age was he? People 10 years from retirement in physical jobs rarely feel that way.
