Correct me if I'm wrong but should they not have waited until the hostage was dead or very badly injured to the point where it's not obvious the hostage will survive.

I'm having a little trouble upstanding how it's ok for the police to effectively execute an innocent hostage.

Granted it's a very difficult situation with no happy ending, but firing 20 rounds or more at both perp and hostage only had one outcome.

I know it's not like the movies where you shoot a gun out of a perps hands, but I could forgive a policeman for trying.

This purely sounds like a serious case of over kill on the cops part. Why shoot an obviously disturbed man with bean bags, all it did was antagonise him and make him start attacking the hostage.

For the record, I've no problem with the maniac been shot.

Saw this today and wondered the same thing. Did they really need to pull the trigger 18 times at close range? I've never shot someone before but assumed it would take less bullets.

    Intentional?

Police said they opened fire, nearly 20 times, after the man began cutting the hostage during the stand-off on 16 June.

What a ****ty position to be in for a copper. Seems like reckless shooting though. Average six shots each.

One man with a scope on a semi-automatic would have the safest option ,
Unfortunately too many fingers on the trigger with nobody in control ,
Perp dead - it will be a job done .
Hostage dead - oops but perp is dead job done

Brainless police. Not one of the ''robots'' could take control.

So he puts knife to her throat, and the way to save her was to shoot through her.

They initially shot him with beanbag rounds before he grabbed the Woman, should have finished the job there and then. No more half measures Walter.

Not a good job by the police, no need for that innocent Woman to die. Ironically they likely used the beanbag rounds out of fear of the PC mob and feigned outrage if they shot him dead while he only had a chair defending himself wielding a knife. If they did that, that Woman would still be alive.

I'd say read the article, but it's a heap of confusion.

They initially used bean bag guns
The man had already been using a knife according to a witness, but the article doesn't say on who (the call was initially a disturbance with the assailants ex-girlfriend)
They started firing after the assailant began cutting the bystander in the throat

In this case, it may be that the cops were trying to do the right thing, but every outcome was bad.

First time a bystander was killed by police in 13 years in LA, which given the gun/crime levels in the city implies the cops are well trained.
